George Turner of Honey Grove begins moving in equipment to build 12 white and four Negro housing units in Whitewright and eight units at Tom Bean. Robert Moore, local carpenter, says he was hired for cabinet and mill work. completion expected in about seven months.
Jim Grider recovered half of a Sun issue from August 1906, with obituaries for Mrs. Sarah F. McElrath, Boone family ties, and local notices. The tremors of town life include court cases, business ads, park talks, and market plans among residents and shops.
Senator Wallace F. Bennett of Utah says political pressure in the 1956 election year will push Congress to cut individual income taxes while avoiding corporate relief. He favors a percentage cut over a flat $20 per person and believes the budget may stay near balance, avoiding deep debt.
U S Veterans Administration announced a new law lets certain Korea War veterans reinstate expired World War I and II GI term insurance. It covers those whose policies expired within 120 days after discharge or during active service. Reinstatement deadline is 120 days after discharge or July 29 1955, whichever is later.
The Whitewright area names two Farm Bureau queen hopefuls for the county contest Friday at 8 p m in Sherman. Donna Wetzel 16 represents the Little Rock community as singer pianist and Whitewright High School junior drum major who also plays basketball. Laura Jean Williams 16 represents the Bethel community as pianist accordion singer and noted cook.
President Eisenhower signed a bill to set a new one dollar per hour minimum wage for 24 000 workers under the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act with the floor effective March 1 The measure aimed to lift about 2 1 million workers mainly in the South many in textile and sawmill jobs earning under a dollar an hour Nearly half of the nation s wage earners are covered while retail service agriculture and construction remain largely excluded from the federal standard.
F C Williams announces the Third Sunday Singing Convention will be held at Ida next Sunday beginning at 2 p m. He notes the last Ida singing was rain plagued yet drew a large crowd and now expects even larger attendance.
The Spiritual Singers from Southwestern Christian College Terrell Texas will perform at the Church of Christ Sunday at 3 00 p m The widely known Negro group presents hymns and spirituals and has appeared before millions across states and in Canada They are radio and TV performers The public is invited and a free will offering will be taken.
Myron Hoff of River Sioux Iowa, age 56, weighs in at 177 pounds earning a prize of a silver dollar per ounce. The total value of his weight is about 2800 dollars as he competes in the official Chicago weighing event.
All boys planning to play football with the Tigers this year must report at the gymnasium at 7 45 a m Monday Aug 22 for workout time to be set by Coach Montgomery. Examinations begin at 7 30 p m Monday night and the season opens Sept 9 at home vs Commerce. The schedule runs through Nov 11 with games at or here each week. Seven lettermen return plus many squad members and ninth graders may join. Coach Montgomery plans to take the team to see the Dallas pro game Friday night Aug 19. contact him Friday morning to join.
Grayson County reports one of the highest traffic death tolls in a 12 county Texas Highway Patrol district. Only Dallas County surpasses Grayson with 12 deaths since January 1, while Dallas and Ellis each total 12. Through July there were 230 Grayson accidents, 111 injuries, and 182 608 dollars in property damage, up from 172, 67, and 102,990 in 1954.
The Texas Citizens Council filed in Howard County district court to block state school funds to districts desegregating. It also sought to halt Big Spring Independent School District’s August 9 integration order and to bar state fund allocation to desegregated districts. The suit hints a special legislative session may follow, with Gov. Shivers forming a study committee on segregation.
Mrs. W. A. Kirkpatrick, longtime reader of this newspaper and predecessors, celebrates her 89th birthday at home. Her children Vera Hickman Laura Harp Velma Grant Nora Dillon and Ira Kirkpatrick attend. A native of the community she has read the Sun since its founding and recalled Whitewright's first paper the Eagle. She also remembers Plow & Hammer, later merged with The Sun.
Mrs. Audrey Evans of near Whitewright sells her 70 acre farm to Alonzo Harper and plans to move to Houston to be near her son Billy Ward Evans at KPRC. She has farmed 20 years, earned a Soil Conservation plaque in 1946, and helped build her home during wartime shortages. She plans to enjoy retirement with two granddaughters.
Bascom Giles pleaded guilty to agreeing to accept a bribe and was sentenced to two to six years in prison in San Antonio. Attorney Clint Small Sr. filed notice of appeal and a motion for a new trial. Bond set at 7500 dollars. The case stems from prior Austin convictions related to a veterans land deal.
The government hires 48 temporary investigators to curb a polio vaccine black market. Investigators will refer unethical practices to medical societies and authorities and ensure only eligible recipients are inoculated after children and pregnant mothers receive vaccine. They will verify vaccine distribution and shipment records.
The Whitewright district will open on September 6. First grade pupils must show a photostatic copy of their birth certificates on file with school records. A new faculty member joins after Mrs. S. T. Montgomery Jr. was elected. Bus routes remain segregated with Rev N P Edwards driving the Negro bus and three white buses led by Tass Farrow, Joe Miller, and Howard Erwin. An extra bus will be added once state funds are approved.
Revival meetings start Sunday at the Assembly of God Church with Rev. Roy L. Hamm delivering sermons on The Message of Truth in Bible Deliverance. Services are at 7 45 each night and the public is invited.
Alabama Governor James Folsom says former President Harry Truman can win the Democratic nomination in 1956 if he seeks it. Folsom insists Truman is a candidate no matter party leaders, predicting he would be nominated and elected, citing Truman’s active speaking schedule.
Labor leaders expect about 5000 people for a Labor Day picnic at Lake Texoma in Denison. House Speaker Sam Rayburn will be principal speaker. Tickets cost 1.50 dollars and go on sale in Rayburn's district. Barbecue at 3:30 p.m. near Denison Dam spillway area. Speeches follow.
New York survey at a sport show finds anglers as the favorite among 28,395 respondents with 17,269 naming fishing. Boating and hunting follow. women make up about 30 percent of participants.
