Explosion Kills 25 in Ohio Andover Fire Devastation
An explosion during a severe storm in Andover Ohio killed at least 25 people and injured 15 others with several more missing. Firefighters reported many bodies recovered from debris and urged caution as searches continued. The blast destroyed six downtown buildings including a dairy store and a restaurant. Initial cause was unclear with possibilities of lightning or gas buildup.

Death of Everett Watkins Drowns Near Tyler
Everett Turner Watkins 48, former Whitewright resident, accidentally drowned near Tyler last Saturday. Funeral services were held in Tyler and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bells. A Bryant Heater Company boiler welder, he was a World War II veteran and Baptist Church member. Surviving: wife Opal Hampton Watkins of Tyler, two half brothers N. K. Turner of Bonham and Marshall Turner of Pomona, California.

Jimmy Smith of Whitewright is among cowboys aboard the Brinton Lakes sailing from Corpus Christi to deliver 85 head of cows to refugee German families under the CROP program. The voyage includes stops in New Orleans and Bremen quarantine before distribution. The shipment, fed with alfalfa hay from Tom Bean, involves Mary Mahoney and other Texans aiding distribution through Heifer Projects Inc. and Church World Service as part of the National Council of Churches effort.

State Education Commissioner Edgar announced a mailed list of 368 textbooks offered for adoption in Texas schools. The 15 member text book committee will hear petitions from Sept 15 to Oct 1 and choose up to 120 titles from Oct 3 to Oct 8.
