Cubs Continue Winning Streak In Regional Baseball Action
The Whitewright Cubs won twice last week and again Sunday, routing Denison Cotton Mill 16 to 1, denison Peabody 11 to 0, and East Side Denison 7 to 6. Pitchers were Hull Fletcher and Hayes. A 11 to 7 win over Farmersville put Whitewright, Farmersville and Carpender’s Bluff in a three way tie for first in an eight team league, with playoffs looming. Cubs manager Claude Birdwell received a gift package from the team.

Selective Service examiners in the Love Field induction center report 47.8 percent of 963 registrants passed both physical and mental exams last week. Of 503 rejected, the rate exceeds the 25 percent state estimate, potentially delaying the September draft calls and shifting initial quotas to older men aged 23 to 25.

Cpl. James E. Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Taylor, is flown back to the United States after being seriously wounded July 16 in Korea. In a letter from Fairfield Air Base California he says he is using a repaired left leg, will train draftees soon, and will be transferred to Brooke General Hospital San Antonio before returning to Texas with the 19th Regiment 24th Infantry Division, first to enter Korea.

New County Agent Named For Grayson
N. R. Owen will succeed Ben Cook as Grayson County agri cultural agent. Owen, county agent in Fannin County for two years, will start Sept. 1 as Cook leaves for A and M College where he is appointed assistant dean of agriculture. Owen has seven years as a county agent and five years teaching agriculture. He graduated from A and M in 1939 with agriculture degree and will attend a two week county agents school at Lufkin on pasture grasses.

In Battle Creek Michigan Mrs Archie Dillon watched her 54 year old husband, owner of a welding and supply service, die of a heart attack aboard their rowboat on South Mud Lake. Her failed efforts to lift the boat anchors delayed aid for two hours.

House votes to restore city mail deliveries to two daily runs
Washington the House approved a bill to cancel a Post Office economy order and restore city mail service to two deliveries daily. The 264 to 108 vote nullified last April’s order reducing deliveries to once daily. The Senate gavel awaits and a presidential veto could occur if enacted.

Barn Fire Destroys T B Autrey Farm Barns
A large barn on the T B Autrey farm south of Whitewright burned down about 9 p m Sunday. Owner Mr Autrey reported losses of 150 bushels each of corn and wheat and 100 bushels of oats, with some recovery by insurance. Fire drew many local residents and a department truck. This followed a prior year gas explosion damaging their home.

40000 Men Sent Korea From States
A Navy spokesman said more than 40,000 American troops have been moved from the United States to Korea in the first seven weeks of the war. The Navy transport service has carried over 500,000 tons of cargo and about 2,000,000,000 barrels of fuel, including aviation gasoline, to support South Korean defenders. The spokesman noted ample war materiel stockpiles in the Pacific and described aviation fuel as the most pressing need but currently satisfactory.

The Whitewright City Commission orders a September 1 1950 election to issue 40000 in waterworks bonds and 13500 in sewer system bonds to fund improvements extensions and repairs. Mayor Summers notes 45000 of 53500 total may be issued now with 10000 remaining for emergencies and a new 75000 gallon water tower planned if approved.

President Truman urged Congress to pass a universal military training law at once.
