Whitewright Independent School District residents are invited to a free ice cream supper at the Elementary School next Thursday Aug 17 at 8 p.m. The PTA will serve and explain the school building condition ahead of the Aug 22 bond election, noting immediate repairs are necessary.
A Sunday morning meeting of the M. Y. F. in the Young People’s Department elected new officers for the coming term. Florena Williams was named president with Myra Nell Scott as vice president and Carol Ryan as secretary-treasurer. Other roles went to Jimmy Nossaman, Gwen Kent, Margaret Williams, Aubrey Burnham, and Lovera Bass as publicity, recreation, worship and evangelism, world missions and friendship, and community service respectively. The Intermediate group voted for its nominees as well.
H O Hawkins district FBI chief in Dallas urged all eligible men to follow the Selective Service Act of 1948. Hoover recommended steps include prompt registration, returning questionnaires, updating address, reporting for examination and induction when ordered, reporting changes in status, carrying documents, and consulting the local board for honest mistakes. Violations may lead to prosecution via U S attorney. All U S residents ages 18 to 26 must register within five days of turning 18.
The United States Public Health Service authorized a Chicago lab to distribute B C G tuberculosis vaccine for general use. Dr Herman N Bundesen plans rapid immunization in crowded Chicago areas and will begin once vaccine supply from the Research Foundation is secured.
Jack Nossaman of Whitewright will be the Republican candidate for the court of criminal appeals in November. Nossaman was nominated at the state convention in Galveston. The party also named Ralph Currie for governor and Marjorie McCorquodale for lieutenant governor. They left the state agriculture commissioner post vacant.
The Agriculture Department says retail food prices are not likely to rise more than 3 to 4 percent for the rest of 1950. With plentiful supplies and strong demand, officials expect only modest price gains as wartime spending boosts incomes, and note no shortage is foreseen.
In Korea U S soldiers refer to all North Koreans as Gooks. The term traces to South Pacific fighting in World War II for Guadalcanal and New Guinea natives and Japanese enemies. The 24th Division revived the term when deployed to Korea to face the Communists.
The Marine Corps said its 80,000 inactive volunteer reserve personnel will be ordered into service. About 50,000 will be called between August 15 and October 31. With recruits and reserves, total active forces could reach about 200,000. goal is 174,000 by October 31, ahead of schedule.
Washington reports the treasury aims to mint more money with a $3,375,000 appropriation endorsed by President Truman. Currency stocks are at a dangerously low level, requiring increased output to replace worn notes. Paper cost set at $575,000 with the rest for salaries and printing.
Robert Lee Crowell, a machinist's mate first class in the Navy, died Saturday in the naval hospital at Norfolk Virginia after a heart attack. Funeral services are pending at Sherman funeral home. He was 33, born March 30 1912 in Hugo Oklahoma and raised in Whitewright. He had served nearly 12 years in the Navy. Surviving are his wife Mary Stateville a son a sister Mrs John Kerr Sherman and a brother Herman Crowell Denison. He was nephew of Howard Hedgpeth Whitewright.
Brig. Gen. Paul L. Wakefield announced 10 050 additional Texans must report for physical examinations September 5 through 15. The total called since Korea began reaches 30 150, with reserves and guardsmen urged to register under the 1948 act. Local boards keep quotas. November induction looms as HQ plans.
State hunting and fishing licenses expire August 31 per W. J. Cutbirth of the Texas Game Fish and Oyster Commission. Freshwater fishing licenses cost 1.65 and big game licenses covering deer and turkey cost 2.25. A state wide permit for non deer and turkey hunters costs 2 annually. Twenty nine other licenses issued by the Game Department also expire August 31.
American units from the 5th Regimental Combat Team and the 25th Infantry Division 35th Regiment linked up six to seven miles east of Chinju as they push to sever Red lines. North Koreans fall back along the Naktong River while U N forces attack Taegu and regain Yongdok.
Norman Leonard Jarvis, 9, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Jarvis of Whitewright, was admitted to the Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas on Monday, July 31. The hospital, serving Texas Crippled Children for over 27 years, relies on private contributions to provide medical care.
The Whitewright School Board voted to issue $110,000 in school bonds in a called meeting on August 8. An election will be held August 22 at the Elementary School to fund additions and rehabilitations, with maintenance tax rising to support the bonds. The plan prioritizes Elementary and High School needs, including roof repairs, rehab of the High School, a Negro School update, a new Home Economics Cottage, and a refurbished gymnasium.
The Whitewright Cubs own four victories and one loss in the Midget League. They beat Coffey's Midgets of Denison 14 to 3 with Larry Hayes pitching, dropped a 5 to 6 extra inning decision to Carpenter's Bluff, defeated Colbert 12 to 6 at Bryant Field with Hayes pitching, and benefited from two forfeits giving them 1 to 0 and 1 to 0 wins. They next travel to Denison to face East Side Crows and will host Farmersville at Bryant Field in the final regular game.
Florence Chadwick, 31, of San Diego, conquers the English Channel in 13 hours 28 minutes, cutting Gertrude Ederle's 1926 mark by an hour and three minutes. Shirley May France, 17, of Somerset, Mass., quits 8 miles from shore after 13 hours 46 minutes. Chadwick reaches Dover from Cap Gris Nez amid cheering crowds and plans a possible return swim.
Washington reports reserves and National Guardsmen on active duty will have legal protection to meet financial obligations when service pay does not cover expenses. Balmorhea State Park hosts the world largest outdoor walled pool at Balmorhea Texas.
The 1950 U S cotton crop is forecast at 10 308 000 bales, down from 16 215 000 last year, with a carryover of 7 000 000 bales. The Aug 1 condition was 75 percent of normal and lint yield 264.9 pounds per acre. Texas leads states with 3 000 000 bales, figures show declines across Arkansas Mississippi Oklahoma New Mexico and Arizona. American-Egyptian crop is pegged at 67 400 bales, with yield 301 pounds per acre versus 346 in 1949.
