Soldier Wounded In Korea Returns Home
Corporal James E. Taylor of the 19th Infantry Regiment 24th Division arrived in Whitewright on a 30 day furlough with his parents after being wounded in Korea on July 16. He suffered a gun shot wound to the left leg and described the army’s earlier missteps as lines of terrain and food conditions were noted. Taylor recalled marching through enemy territory for about 20 miles before returning to U.S. lines. He arrived at Brooke General Hospital San Antonio after surgery and a 14 day recovery from anesthesia. He commented on food, water quality and grave sites, and expressed optimism that a turning point in the war had been reached with new equipment. He noted initial shortages of hand grenades in his company.
