Ed Kent of Mrs W H King’s farm north of town delivered the first 1938 cotton bale Tuesday afternoon. It was ginned free by Donigan gin and not sold. Harold Doss public weigher awarded a $27.10 premium to Kent, including $3.35 in trade. A table lists first bale dates and prices since 1926, with 1938 showing August 9 and no sale.

U.S. Engineer to Probe Dam Flood Conditions in Texas
H W Bashore of the Reclamation Bureau arrived in Austin to begin a flood investigation of the Colorado River. He will review stream-flow records, Buchanan Dam water stages, and flood levels from Marshall Ford to the Gulf. Sherman reports total delinquent taxes of 75 255 90 for the year ending June 30. Tax Assessor-Collector Collier Yeary presented the figures to the commissioners court and the delinquent tax rolls were approved. Real property on the rolls yielded 48 746 12 in taxes, supplements added 6 509 78. County receives 50 145 21, State 18 600 91. Mortuary Pate Reeves 46 Found Dead Near Whitewright
Pate Reeves aged 46 was found dead at his home four miles from Whitewright at 2 15 a m Wednesday after years of declining health. Funeral services were held at Blanton Cemetery at 5 p m Wednesday, with arrangements directed by Glen Earnheart. Reeves was born near Whitewright on December 4 1891, a son of Mr and Mrs George Reeves. He was a Baptist. Surviving are his mother one brother Claude Reeves at home five sisters Helen Roberson Farmersville Cleo Bilner Savoy Cecil Inman Whitewright route 4 and Florence Reeves at home.

John E. Martin dies at 87 in Hillsboro hometown
John E. Martin aged 87 died at his Hillsboro home Wednesday morning. Funeral services were held in Hillsboro today. He was born in Tennessee on January 8, 1851 and lived in Hillsboro since 1879, running the oldest business there a harness and saddle shop opened in 1879. Survived by son E B Martin of Whitewright, daughter Mrs. Luther Neal of Hillsboro, several grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was a longtime Methodist and father of E B Martin.
