Tax hikes loom in 1940 Texas governor race
In Austin the State Automatic Tax Board set ad valorem at 77 cents per $100 while the legislature fixed a $22.50 per capita school apportionment. The Board of Education kept the per capita at $22.50 under the maximum to cover a $4.5 million deficit. The levy components are 35 cents general fund, 7 cents Confederate pension, and 35 cents school purposes. Opponents of Gov. ODaniels will attack tax increases amid his economy rhetoric and the remission bill, as critics say the first year raises taxes to the highest since 1934. Rumors tag Bill McCraw as a possible candidate for Railroad Commissioner, with Lon Smith's seat in play.
