C C Morgan of the east of Orangeville brought in the first bale of 1939 cotton on Monday. The bale weighed 495 pounds, graded strict middling and was ginned free by Donigan Gin Company. It sold for 9% and Morgan did not sell his seed. Ben Ball awarded a $21.85 premium among local business houses. A table lists first-bale dates and prices since 1926, noting two years with no sale due to missing bank head certificates in 1934 and government tags in 1938.

Sherman Boosters Visit Whitewright August 23

San Antonio Texas WPA head quarts reports about 20 000 workers to be dropped from projects in three weeks to meet new Congress imposed limits. About one fourth of the 85 000 Texas WPA employes affected by rules excluding veterans after 18 months. 65 000 unemployed in Texas qualify for WPA but no replacement expected due to quota cuts. Artificial Props For Farm Prices Being Arranged
Washington officials push plans to prop up prices by lending to farmers on surpluses of wheat corn cotton wool and dairy. Congress voted 119 million to restore stock of the commodity credit corporation creating about 250 million for loans. Loans target 55 to 57 cents a bushel for corn and similar support for wheat and other commodities. The program seeks to store 257 million bushels of old corn at 7 cents a bushel for another year.

Billy Magar county supervisor told the Bonham chamber of commerce Tuesday evening. Work started Wednesday morning with youths as lifeguards and general maintenance helpers. Of the 5000 dollars planned, more than 4000 will be spent on salaries.
