Washington The House killed President Roosevelts lending program by voting 193 to 166 against adopting a rule to bring the measure up. The defeat blocks further consideration of the $1.95 billion loan plan by this Congress and was achieved by a mainly Republican minority with some Democratic conservatives.
The U S House economy bloc defeated a 119 million dollar loan for farm price supports and sent a 54.191 million dollar deficiency bill to the Senate. Secretary Wallace warned that without loans corn, wheat, cotton, dairy, wool and rye prices would collapse toward 1932 levels. Vote was 116 to 110, with urban members splitting from usual farm bloc loyalties.
In Austin Agricultural Commissioner J. E. McDonald urged 5000 Texas cotton ginners to fix inaccurate bale weights. He warned of penalties from 20 to 200 dollars for false weights, saying errors of 10 to 20 pounds are common and enforcement will tighten. W. S. Bussey noted gradual improvements but more action is needed.

In Pawtucket a middle aged woman, after sipping a soft drink, cried that she had been robbed and showed $24 missing from her purse. Bystanders sent her to police station, then she retrieved the money from her stocking and explained she forgot.
Ex students and local alumni, led by Rev E L Silliman and Roy Robinson, met at Rev J L Truett’s home to plan Grayson College homecoming on Sunday September 3. The day includes 10 am registration, talks, noon picnic lunch, and an afternoon fellowship meeting led by Silliman and a publicity and arrangements committee managing logistics and programs.

A Sherman planned local appreciation dinner for Grayson County Judge Jake J. Loy became a regional tribute as more than 200 guests from every North Texas county attended. Toastmaster Lee Simmons of the U S District Court led remarks from Judge J T Suggs Jr and others. Loy, in a third term, was elected president of the National Association of County Judges amid congratulatory telegrams from officials across Texas and Oklahoma. J A Hot Alexander mayor of Garland will become superintendent of the Woodmen Circle Home at Sherman on September 1 after being chosen by national directors in a Sherman meeting. His wife will be hostess. They succeed Dr and Mrs H E Stout who resigned to travel. Alexander is known in Whitewright from 12 years ago as part of Alexander Coldwell, a men’s shop. Mrs Alexander is former Whitewright school teacher Dora Tucker who taught there in 1915 and 1916.
Sherman officials forecast a 60 cent tax rate per $100 valuation for 1940, a 20 cent cut from 1939, if the budget proposed by county auditor B M Whiteacre is adopted. The plan calls for $502,936.56 in expenditures, $460,781.49 in tax revenues, and a $42,155.07 shortfall wiped out by the state bond assumption law. The budget credits higher federal inmate feeding receipts and auto registrations, with total resources pegged at $714,407.59 and road funds of $175,722.10 allocated across precincts. A $14,000 warrant to match WPA road funds and a 3 cent levy to repay the loan were approved amid debate over existing debt.
Revival services begin Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church three miles south of Whitewright. Rev Ed McDonald, reared in Bethel, will preach. He has long resided in West Texas and is well known to the area. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily.

AUSTIN August additions to the old age pension rolls totaled 1 080. The August total brings the rolls to 118 984 with checks around 1 684 000 dollars, split evenly between federal and state funds. The law change removing children's support as a qualification caused lower gains than forecast. Reinvestigations under the new statute are required. the State Welfare Board will take over Sept 1.
