Pilot Grove cemetery event draws crowds this Sunday

The Pilot Grove populace will visit the cemetery this Sunday to honor ancestors, with peonies in full bloom. Phillip Earnheart will set up a tent and chairs for registration from 1 to 6 p.m., inviting all to attend.

Outstanding Citizens Honored at CofC Banquet in Whitewright

Whitewright held its annual Chamber of Commerce banquet last Wednesday night honoring three outstanding citizens for 1976 Man of the Year Charles Truksa Woman of the Year Mrs. Hugh Hunter and Farmer of the Year Billy Partridge. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Reagan Brown headlined as entertaining speaker. Milton Simpson became the new Chamber president, with officers installed and appreciation given to outgoing leaders.

Joe Hennig Named Outstanding Young Man of America

Tyler resident Joe Clint Hennig, son of Clint and (unnamed) Hennig, has been chosen for the 1977 Outstanding Young Men of America edition. A 1965 Whitewright high school graduate, he works as assistant manager for Texas Power and Light in Tyler, with a Texas Tech University BBA in business and accounting. He is married to Jan Stansell and has two children, lives in Tyler, and participates in Rotary and Tyler Jaycees while competing in a national Jaycee speaking contest in Dallas May 13–14.

Trustees Review Drug and Discipline Issues at Whitewright

Whitewright school trustees met to discuss two students accused of marijuana on campus and a bus discipline incident. Supt. Dick Capps said suspensions are likely for the marijuana charges and noted past suspensions linked to a bus incident. A Friday justice court appearance is scheduled for a parent involved in the earlier case. Pre-registration for 1977 78 kindergartners set for May 4. eligibility includes children age five by Sept. 1. Parents should bring birth certificates and immunization records. Minimum immunizations include DTP, polio, measles, and rubella.

Mayor Walker To Speak At Cannon Cemetery Memorial

Whitewright mayor Dick Walker will speak Sunday at Cannon Cemetery memorial services. Decoration Day events start at 2 p.m. Church services are at 11 a.m., followed by a noon covered dish luncheon. Attendees are invited to bring a basket lunch.

Scott Wilson Wins Rotary Scholarship for 500 Award

Scott Wilson son of Mr and Mrs William Wilson will receive the annual Rotary Club 500 scholarship at the club meeting in the 200 club. A Whitewright High senior he aims for UT Austin in architectural engineering and holds WHS honors, Beta Club and senior class president posts. He earned National Merit commendation this fall and was named Fighting Tiger at the All-Sports banquet in April.

Truksa Accepts Idaho Bank Post from Whitewright

Charles Truksa longtime vice president at Bank of Whitewright leaves this week for First Security Bank of Idaho in Boise after three years in Whitewright He will train two months in Boise before transfer to a Boise area branch His wife Brenda remains in Whitewright until school ends Truksa a Vietnam veteran and former state comptroller’s office worker has deep family roots in Texas and Idaho and was named Man of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce for his local civic service
