Western Week Kicks Off With Parade and Rodeo in Whitewright
Western Week activities start with a 3:30 p.m. parade from First Baptist Church. Prizes go to best float, best dressed horse and rider, and most unique entry. A rodeo follows at the arena featuring events like bareback racing and bull riding. A barbecue, variety show, dancing and the crowning of three kings and three queens conclude the evening.

Memorial drive seeks donations for Sgt Jimmy Burchfield fund
The Whitewright community’s drive to raise funds for a Sgt Jimmy Burchfield memorial scholarship has surpassed 900 dollars toward a 2000 dollar goal. Burchfield, a 1963 Whitewright High School graduate, was killed in Vietnam on March 20.

Lions hear Wigley on social security in Grayson County
Bill Wigley of the Grayson County social security office told Whe itewright Lions Club that the average national social security check is about 100 dollars per month, but in Grayson County it totals around 82 dollars and about half of retirees depend solely on social security. Larry Franklin Tops Open Fiddlers Contest in Mineral Wells
Larry Franklin, son of Mr and Mrs Louis Franklin of Whitewright won first place in the Brazos Merchants Association Open Fiddlers Contest at the Brazos Shopping Center Mineral Wells in the 2 year old and under division earning 25 dollars and a trophy. He played two breakdowns and a waltz. The event was promoted by the Pioneer Old Times Fiddlers Club Weatherford with emcees William Pop Lunsford and Jack Burger.
