The Whitewright community is asked to submit clever slogan ideas for The Sun. Readers may call or write, with front-page photo chances for selected submissions, as the paper invites civic pride and reader involvement after recent elections. Local updates include city hall financial reports, a church sing, and high school students touring ETSU.
The Whitewright Stampede and Rodeo Day run April 21 26 will feature a beard contest root beer drinking square dance and a Stampede King Queen crownings during Saturday rodeo. Junior Rodeo Friday and Saturday nights include barbecue by Ernie's tickets sold by students. A parade Friday at 430 pm and prizes for riding club and float. Randy Pittman to be contacted about the parade. Doyle McKinney a Rotary leader spoke of his India visit and exchange program noting poverty and kindness in India and contrasting West Dallas.
Dick Capps Mrs Marian McMillin and Bobby Clark were named Man Woman and Farmer of the Year at the Whitewright Chamber of Commerce banquet. Emory Christian praised Capps for service to school and community while Priscille Riker honored McMillin for teaching and library work. Bill Dyer recognized Clark a 1954 graduate and farmer. Officers installed included Riker Herber Jester Truksa. crowd neared 165 as Judy Mallett and Rev Dale Gore provided entertainment.
Harlin Sewell of the Texas Department of Public Safety conducted a bicycle safety course at Whitewright Elementary School. He shared a film The Day the Bicycles Disappeared and distributed safety booklets listing 11 rules and equipment standards for bicycles. The program aims to educate youth on motor vehicle safety and crime prevention and can be arranged through Trooper Sewell at 893-8833 in Sherman.
Joe Ballard a six foot senior at Whitewright High School was named to the Class A All State Team by the Texas Sports Writers Association He scored 42 points at the state tournament Coach Kline said he was the main reason they reached state Also named to the first team were Gary Ughlie Jon Gates Royce Dorsey and David Adkisson all listed as tall seniors from Path Shallowater Snook Lake Dallas.
The Whitewright Chamber Bicentennial Committee outlines a July 4 celebration with a 10 a.m. parade, concession stands, family picnics, and civic group participation. Events include contests from frog jumping to quilting, a men’s softball tournament, a bluegrass band, and plans for a sky diving act, with a May meeting to finalize details.
Whitewright prepares for Circus Day with the Fisher Brothers Circus arriving April 29 at the American Legion Park. The Whitewright PTO reports last minute ticket sales as families anticipate a one and a half hour family show featuring trained performers and animals.
Raymond Bailey of Whitewright remains in stable condition in Sherman Community Hospital's ICU after an accidental 22 caliber gunshot wound. He was riding with his wife and brother in Sherman when the pistol discharged, striking him in the abdomen as he and his wife described prior firing, with the shot potentially hitting his liver.
Newly elected Parent-Teacher Organization officers will meet at 7 30 p.m. in the home of Mrs. Dan LeDane to select committees for the 1975 76 school year. New officers include Mrs. Dan LeDane as president and several named vice presidents secretary publicity treasurer room mother coordinator year book chairman and more.
Bill Dyer was re elected president of the Whitewright School Board at a meeting last Tuesday. James Donaghey will serve as vice president and Charles Skaggs as secretary. Board members Skaggs and Donaghey took oaths to three year terms and Narvin Alexander began a two year term.
Whitewright 16A Tigers won the Bonham district track meet with 168 points led by weight events and sprint relays. Ricky Newman swept shot put and discus and Jay Jackson plus Meldridge Orr led sprints as nine Tigers qualified for regionals in Stephenville on April 26.
Mrs Felix Smith of McKinney was elected president of the Hurricane Creek Country Club Ladies Association. Terry Hix of Van Alstyne named first vice president with officers including Charles Rice Gunter second vice president and Jack Strickland Van Alstyne secretary. The luncheon program featured International Hair Studio of Dallas with Jeannette Helga Max and four members as models and door prizes of haircuts.
World of Poetry sponsors a $1000 grand prize plus fifty cash or merchandise awards for poems of all subjects and styles. Contest director Joseph Mellon says 1975 will be a year of exciting discoveries. Special music performed by Rev. and Mrs. Dale Gore of Sherman at the chamber banquet Saturday evening.
