Texans will vote in May primaries on legalized gambling for horse racing a move last tried about thirty years ago and opposed due to social evils. The Mobil Economy Run reported winners with mileage records from 31 to 18 MPG and motorists could expect about 10 MPG less on typical cars. A city work crew is filling curb holes to ease rough street riding this week.
Jim Stuteville of Dallas recounts Magnolia Oil now Mobil using IBM office automation that wiped out about 400 jobs. The firm retired workers with 35 plus years and kept younger staff, offering full retirement plus Social Security until 65. He warns automation will erase more jobs and strain the economy. J. H. Gosnell 79 longtime Whitewright resident died Wednesday in Sherman after a two week illness. Funeral at 2 30 Friday at Barnheart chapel with Rev Calvin Tolar and Rev A C Broach officiating. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by wife Georgia Autrey son James daughter Gilbert Keck J M Ashinhurst Jr James Robnett six grandchildren.
George Gillett a Whitewright native died Friday at his Dallas home 3700 Euclid A private graveside service was held at 11 a m Saturday at Restland Memorial Park Rev Marcus Chunn officiating He was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Tom Gillett and lived in Dallas most of his adult life Surviving are a brother Grady Gillett Whitewright and a sister Mrs Cordia Caldwell Dallas
Funeral services were conducted at Earnheart Chapel for Mrs Rufus W McMillin age 80 of Pilot Grove. She died in a Sherman hospital and is buried in Pilot Grove Cemetery. Survivors include two sons five daughters and many grandchildren.
President Kennedy said the Texas 49th Armored Division will be released from active duty in August if the international situation does not deteriorate. The division will be replaced by a regular Army unit, with details to be announced on April 30. Guardsmen and Reservists called up last year would be released in August, barring any climate change, as a permanent backup force rather than an emergency measure.

About 1.7 million Texans aged 21 to 60 paid the poll tax by January 31 as the May primary includes the tax and parimutuel betting. If all paid, the state could collect over 7 million annually, but actual receipts are under 2.5 million for 1961.

County Agent Stanley Oakley and Charles Knight oversee the event, with 90 beef cattle and 90 dairy stock entered, plus swine and sheep divisions.
The 22nd Annual Social Security Trustees report shows 1961 income to the Old Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance funds exceeded outgo by 409 million.
