Sun Honored by Historians in Texas Award

The Whitewright Sun received a Historical Preservation award from the Texas Historical Foundation’s Historical Survey Committee. Mrs. J Emory Christian presented the honor, praising the paper for support and coverage of RAMPS activities in local and state history.

May Draft Call Down for Texas Quota and Medical Personnel Changes

The May draft call for Texas is 1 453, down from 1 737 in April, with the state’s share of a national quota of 27 600. About 8 234 men are to be forwarded for May pre induction exams, down from 10 210 in April, as adjustments follow DoD needs. The selection order favors delinquent 19 year olds, volunteers under 26, and nonvolunteers 19 through 25 with age and marital status criteria. A new Area Business Review Page debuts in the Sun to spotlight Grayson and Fannin counties firms, encouraging Whitewright shoppers and cross county commerce.

Juvenile counts in Grayson County March cases detailed

Sixty four juveniles were handled in March by the Grayson County Juvenile Office. Forty six were boys and eighteen were girls with offenses including theft affray truancy runaways loitering car theft and shoplifting among others. Two girls were sent back to TYC for parole violation and one boy for parole. The department now handles sixteen on parole and four on probation. Mr and Mrs Harold Smith of Dallas bought Chris Cafe in Whitewright and Mr Smith formerly ran service stations.

Donaghey and Billner Win Posts in Whitewright Elections

Donaghey and Billner led a five-candidate field for two Whitewright school board seats with Billner edging in at 92 votes to claim the second seat. Sonny Smith, J. B. Thornhill, and John Curtis won the city council posts without opposition, while Earl Blanton and Wayne Gray retained county school board seats. Several write-ins were recorded in all races.

Deadline Near For 1969 Vehicle Inspections In Texas

Captain Marvin Blount of the Texas Department of Public Safety urges motorists to obtain 1969 inspection stickers immediately. Cars are checked for brakes lights horn and windshield wipers while commercial vehicles face additional required items. Wet weather may shorten inspection days and fines of 100 to 200 dollars apply for driving without a valid sticker after April 15.

Tigers take second in District 16-A track meet at ETSU

Led by Will Cureton Carl Dunlap and Randy Lancaster the Tigers placed second in District 16-A at ETSU Cureton won the high jump and finished first in the discus Dunlap took first in discus Cureton and Dunlap qualify for the Denton regional meet on April 19 This is the second consecutive year for both boys Honey Grove led with 203 points Whitewright 65 Van Alstyne 49 Also Cureton set a meet high jump record.

Whitewright Rotary hears farming profit ideas

Advisor Bobby McCorkle outlines marketing focus and local market gaps to raise farm incomes in Whitewright area. He cites cotton limits, grain sorghum prices, possible feed lots, swine expansion, intensified pasture work, and new clubs to connect farmers with business leaders. On Wed April 2 Whitewright High School Beta Club inducted seven new members Mary Lynn England Janis Hennig Tim Lancaster Mike Spann Jane Biggerstall Glenna Mc Collum and Phyllis Earnheart. The Shield Induction Ceremony featured nine Beta members explaining the nine characteristics. Certificates and pins were awarded to new members, followed by initiation of the junior high club with 14 members and remarks from Mrs Mays and Mrs Hareper.

Bells School District calls new bond election after close defeat
