La Porte County School Field Day Results

The La Porte County schools hosted a field day with large attendance and multiple events. Winners included Victor Long of Union township in several runs, Wright Smith of Lincoln township in multiple races, Neva Fair of Center township for girls 40 yard dash, and Arch ie LeRoy of Coolspring township winning the 14 plus hop step jump. The north-south baseball game ended with the south side winning seven to five.

Enrollment not up to expectations in Indiana schools

Figures compiled by State Superintendent F A Cotton for 1903 show enrollment growth lagging population gains. Total pupils enrolled this year are 786,638, up from 767,436 in 1903, with a 5,635 increase noted for 1902 over the prior year.

Life Sentence for Convict Who Murdered Fellow Inmate

Herman Gihrs, inmate at the reformatory, received a life term at Jeffersonville Circuit Court for the January 7 murder of Cyrus Berry. William Kennedy Freed After 30 Years Struggle for Justice

After decades, William Kennedy walked from Governor Durbin's office a free man, exonerated of a murder for which he was once sentenced to death and then life. Lucy Ann Stoner born December 17 1827 in Greens Castle Putnam County Indiana died June 8 1904 at her home in Westville aged 76 years 5 months and 21 days. She was the eldest of ten children. She married B A Daggy November 29 1845 and they raised six children. Funeral held at home with Rev O G Smock officiating and pallbearers listed. buried west of town.

Death of Laporte Pioneer Antone Wanner

Antone Wanner was born in Switzerland on August 12 1833 and died in Laporte on Thursday June 9 at 10 30am after residing there since 1852. He married Verna Stamm in 1853 who died in 1881. six children were born to them with four surviving. He helped found the Laporte German M E church and funeral services were conducted there Sunday afternoon.

Death of Union Mills Fireman Struck at South Chicago Depot

James Schelley of Union Mills was killed by an Illinois Central train at the South Chicago depot while returning to his boarding house. He had worked in Chicago as a fireman and was on the 10 o clock homeward when he was struck. the exact details are unclear but it is believed he crossed the tracks and was confused by passing trains. He is a brother of Mrs William Gooden of Union Mills.
