Dismal Swamp Comes Into Profit as Virginia Cultivation Grows
The Dismal Swamp in Virginia shifts from colonial promoter interest to profitable cultivation. Promoted by George Washington and others, the swamp once served as a refuge for runaways and now attracts truck farmers converting the land to productive gardens. The piece notes the swamp’s pure streams, shallow elevation, and potential onion cucumber pest control. It also mentions Lake Shore's Twentieth Century Limited, its safety record, and a railroad tragedy in which a baggage man for the Big Four died after falling from a speeding train, with Rev. Father Schram receiving the news and continuing his duties.
