County correspondence from Michigan City notes heavy ice harvests during the cold spell. The Hoosier Slide is rapidly disappearing as workers load sand on three sides. Community notices include deaths, illnesses diphtheria and quarantine concerns, local events, and various local names and places.
The Wanatah Mirror editor chronicles a ramble in search of a female ghost in Wanatah. A man named Billy visits a reportedly haunted site using alcohol and a carpenter hole to witness a spirit said to emit light, but he leaves without proof.
The community reports several sick lists and visits this week. Postmaster Gust uses crutches while recovering, and Dr and Mrs Fravel of Westville are noted as suddenly deceased, drawing respect from locals.
James McMahon was confined to his home by sickness last week. C. E. Goodall attended his nephew Louis Goodall’s funeral near Hatches Mills. Grandma Goodall is ill. Miss Avera and Mrs. C. E. Goodall receive news of Joseph Scott's death in Missouri. Next weekend marks the M. P. church quarterly meeting with Elis and Rev. Agar. Endeavor society to be addressed by Miss Ayers. Mrs. S. S. Hay travels to Larwil for medical treatment.
Pierson drug store manager Martin notes a great run on Chamberlain's Cough Remedy during la grippe season. Five bottles sold to a buyer on one occasion, with strong satisfaction from users. The remedy is praised for stopping coughs healing sore throats and lungs quickly. For sale by E. T. Scott.
OTIS, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Badur drove to Michigan City Friday. Miss Tillie Hiskey returned to her home after a week's visit with her brother in Michigan City. Mrs. E. B. Snyder was the guest of Mrs. David Rapp, Saturday. John Othlesky and son, Martin, made a business trip to M. City, Tuesday. Miss Anna Miller, of Burdick, was the guest of Miss Mamie Roh), Sunday. Wm. Fiotow returned to his home Monday, after a visit of several days in Peter Jinickey and Minnie Bedenkop were the guests of Clara Rapp, Sunday evening.
F M Ross of Winfield Tennessee credits his wife with saving his life by insisting on Dr Kings New Discovery for a severe cough. He states the medicine cured his chest and lung ailments and offers 60 cents to 1.00 priced bottles with trial bottles free at E T Scotts drug store.
W L Dodd has become a salesman for the Wiens sanitary dustless floor brush made in Milwaukee. He visited in Milwaukee while caring for a hospital patient and secured territory in the state with an option on the entire handle. The device acts as a broom with a dustless action, using oil fed through palm fibers to lift dirt rather than scatter it. It promises longer life than six brooms and savings in price, labor, health, and temper due to its sanitary design.
Advertisement promotes Grain-O as a non stimulating alternative to coffee that nourishes and aids sleep. It claims Grain-O looks and tastes like coffee and suits nervous persons, youths, and children. Available in 15 and 250 sizes from grocers.
At a January 15 1900 Ladies Home Library Association meeting resolutions honor Mrs L Fravel a longtime member and widow of Dr Fravel. The M E Sunday school also mourns their superintendent and wife with prayers and tributes to their service. Congressman C B Landis visited Brentanos in Washington and bought five best selling books for Christmas gifts. He noted four were Hoosier creations and praised Ben Hur as a Hoosier achievement. He conceded a soft spot for Hoosiers despite being born in Ohio.
An assortment of old Toledo advertisements includes Hall's Catarrh Cure promoting internal use and priced at 75c per bottle with testimonials. Also parables on work and virtue, urging practical housekeeping over showy vanity and ornate jewelry.
Edison advertised laxative tablets with a refund offer if ineffective. The box bears E W Groves signature and a claim of cure. The text notes a price of 200 and 0 in the OCR fragment.
An advertisement from a 19th or early 20th century newspaper promotes Dr King New Life Pills claiming nightly use for two weeks restores youth. Testimonial by D. E. Turner of Dempseytown Pa praises liver and bowels relief. Priced at 25 cents at Scott's.

The Laporte County Farmers Institute schedule spans January 23 to 25 with morning and afternoon sessions daily. Topics include dairy creamery benefits poultry culture corn culture apple orchards household economics and farm life essays and sessions on furniture farming duties and fertility led by local leaders and educators.
Rt Reverend Joseph Rademacher D D bishop of Fort Wayne died January 12 at 11 AM after over four years of poor health. The bells tolled for him as crowds learned of the loss. He had led the diocese with Vicar General Guendling acting in recent months. A bishop coadjutor is being considered and Rome is handling the selection. Born December 3 1840 in Clinton County Michigan he studied at St Vincent College and was ordained August 2 1853. He served Attica Indiana St Paul Columbia City Fort Wayne Nashville and other posts before his Fort Wayne tenure. His death is mourned by all who knew him.
