Wm Osborn hailed for fastest roadster team. Wheat looks sick after cold. Dr and Mrs Fravel of Westville die, leaving many friends here. J Jacobson improving. Martin Aker plans to build a workshop.

The Burlington fast mail train pulled by engine 1592 ran from Burlington Iowa to Chicago in 209 minutes for 206 miles with heavy head winds and a heavy load of foreign mail. An 83 mile Mendota to Chicago section completed in 76 minutes, the Mendota to Aurora 46 mile stretch in 39 minutes. After adjusting for mail and water, the average speed was about 80 miles per hour.
South Chicago Daily Calumet reports Pierson drug store manager Martin notes strong sales of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy with five bottles sold to a single customer. The remedy is praised for rapid relief from la grippe related coughs sore throat and lung irritations sold by E. T. Scott.
Grain-O is promoted as a drink that cannot be consumed at night by many people because it spoils sleep. The copy claims Grain-O can be drunk anytime and benefits include nourishment and cheer, while resembling real coffee in look and taste. It targets nervous persons, youth, and children.

County Superintendent C A Zeigler reports to a Laporte Herald representative that attendance for the first half of the school year is excellent and will average about 90 percent of enrollment. Teachers are instructed to explain absences on monthly reports if attendance drops below five percent. The truancy bureau has been overworked, prompting teachers to report such cases.
Drs. Theopolie and Mrs. Fravel died Sunday night after years of heart trouble and illness. The couple, longtime Westville residents, were prominent in church and community life. Funeral services were held at the M E church with large attendance and interment in Laporte, with many relatives and friends gathering to pay respects.
A woman telegraphed ahead to arrange conveyance to meet her at Laporte. Her message was not delivered, causing delays until she secured a vehicle and was driven to the final place arriving around 4 a.m. Monday.
Dr Fravel and his wife Mary Cobb Stewart died suddenly on Sunday evening after years of dedicated service in Westville. Dr Fravel practiced for over forty years, serving all patients with care. Mrs Fravel was a longtime trustee of the Ladies Home Library Association. Both left a large community legacy and died within moments of each other.

The new warden George A H Shideler initiates reforms at the Michigan state prison. Will A Whittaker, chief clerk, notes early success as third class prisoners are moved to second class on Thanksgiving and promised the same priorities as second class inmates.
The Republicans of La Porte County call a meeting at township or ward level on Saturday January 13 1900 to elect township committeemen and delegates to the Tenth district convention in Hammond January 16 1900. Seventy delegates and alternates are apportioned among townships with Laporte to select officers for the county central committee at a January 15 1900 meeting.
Excitement grows as rich oil strikes spread within days around San Pierre. Leases multiply, with several near land leased by South Bend residents. Seegrist farm west of town shows indications of productivity as material arrives for multiple wells. Oil men predict the Kankakee marsh region may soon surpass other Indiana fields.
Farmers across Indiana Wisconsin Illinois and nearby states rally against the Illinois Beef Inspection committee which charges one dollar per head for cattle sent to the Chicago stock yards. A New Year meeting at the Briggs House in Chicago voiced strong protest against the charges.
The Laporte Herald reports a rule change mandating a committee examination before bar admission. Previously a certificate of good character sufficed, but now all applicants must obtain a satisfactory report from a committee of attorneys. The measure mirrors a policy already in force in the superior court for three years.
The prison board, before adjourning Friday, added three more names to the paroled convicts list, totaling fifteen released this month. Only four men will be discharged this month by expiration of sentence, bringing monthly discharges to one. The document notes the prison population is not reduced by these paroles and suggests future releases will come by parole.
