Record-Setting Burlington Fast Mail Train Run

The Burlington fast mail train pulled by engine 1592 ran from Burlington Iowa to Chicago in 209 minutes for 206 miles with heavy head winds and a heavy load of foreign mail. An 83 mile Mendota to Chicago section completed in 76 minutes, the Mendota to Aurora 46 mile stretch in 39 minutes. After adjusting for mail and water, the average speed was about 80 miles per hour.

Attendance excellent in county schools says Zeigler

County Superintendent C A Zeigler reports to a Laporte Herald representative that attendance for the first half of the school year is excellent and will average about 90 percent of enrollment. Teachers are instructed to explain absences on monthly reports if attendance drops below five percent. The truancy bureau has been overworked, prompting teachers to report such cases.

Westville Mourns Fravel Couple Dies After Long Illness

Drs. Theopolie and Mrs. Fravel died Sunday night after years of heart trouble and illness. The couple, longtime Westville residents, were prominent in church and community life. Funeral services were held at the M E church with large attendance and interment in Laporte, with many relatives and friends gathering to pay respects.

Railway mixup delays transport for a woman

A woman telegraphed ahead to arrange conveyance to meet her at Laporte. Her message was not delivered, causing delays until she secured a vehicle and was driven to the final place arriving around 4 a.m. Monday.

Pair Dies in Westville After Sudden Illness

Dr Fravel and his wife Mary Cobb Stewart died suddenly on Sunday evening after years of dedicated service in Westville. Dr Fravel practiced for over forty years, serving all patients with care. Mrs Fravel was a longtime trustee of the Ladies Home Library Association. Both left a large community legacy and died within moments of each other.

Parole additions push monthly releases to fifteen

The prison board, before adjourning Friday, added three more names to the paroled convicts list, totaling fifteen released this month. Only four men will be discharged this month by expiration of sentence, bringing monthly discharges to one.
