The 1903 report to the Governor shows 32 physicians died that year while 265 formerly unregistered physicians secured papers. Most new registrants were recent graduates. some from other states gained registration by equivalence. The tally suggests between 7,000 and 9,500 physicians in Indiana.

Ivan Martin aged 19 pleaded guilty to stealing a horse and buggy from Farmer Waugh. With no attorney and limited understanding, judges and lawyers argued doubts about intent, suggesting possible innocence or mercy. Judge Tuthill ordered further investigation and deferred sentencing until early next week.
Westville lies on the proposed New York and Chicago highway as the route heads west from the city toward Valparaiso. A convention for the project will be held in Erie Pennsylvania on March 16 and 17 with national figures and leading road builders invited to speak. William Runyan a 40 year old druggist was shot through the heart Saturday night at 10 30 in his South Bend store by an unknown robber. Joseph Suchanek ex member of the Indiana House of Representatives aided but the gun fired by the assailant was empty. Suchanek attacked the man with a poker as Runyan died on the sidewalk. Police hunted the killer.

The Grand Lodge of Indiana I O O F reports a current surplus of 2 834 524 08 across subordinate lodges, up 540 000 from last year, with 694 lodges and 63 745 members. During the year 5 538 candidates were initiated and 626 admitted by card, while 239 281 79 was spent on relief for deceased members and families.
Chicago police investigate a Walkerton born Walkerton woman Mrs Jaephine D Beux 38 who attempted suicide Sunday morning in Chicago after a romance and jilting. She wrote a letter to police and slashed both wrists with a razor laying beside her sleeping baby. revived at county hospital and later told authorities her husband Joseph DeBeux of Walkerton had left her. Letters from mother and sister discuss jilting and a rival, shedding light on her unhappy life.
Mrs. M. J. Standiford named executrix of Martha Herrold estate. Mr. and Mrs. Benson entertain a new baby girl. Edith Peters hosts a young people gathering while others visit relatives in Goshen South Bend and Elkhart. Mrs. Rachel E. Flood widow of James Flood died at 4 30 pm Monday at her son J O Floods home in Laporte after a long illness. Born November 26 1829 in Jefferson County she married James Flood August 16 1848. Four children survive Anna Standiford George R Flood Dr Flood and J O Flood plus seven siblings. She was a devout Methodist.
J. K Lucas aged 59 died at his home near Green Castle on the 22nd after two years of diabetes. He leaves a wife and a son and daughter. Born in Ouir, he lived in this place twenty five years ago before moving to Birmingham Terre Haute and then the farm where he died. He was an engineer on the Vandalia line for years, quitting about five years ago. Funeral at Terre Haute Thursday. He was a son of Mrs. Lucas of this place.
In San Francisco on February 12 1904 Mrs John Smith sister of the deceased provides details about Francis Fiood son of Mr and Mrs James Fiood who lived east of town. He left the area about fifteen years ago and was then a young man with promise. Further particulars promised as soon as obtainable.
Johannes Nelson aged 88 years 9 months 13 days died at the Peter Lindall farm Sunday Feb 14 after about a month of illness. He came to America in 1877 and returned with Lindall from a Sweden visit. Funeral held Wednesday Feb 17 at Swedish Lutheran church Chesterton with burial in Chesterton cemetery.
Olcott Dillingham died about midnight Saturday night after a long illness. He was about 75 years old and survived by a wife and two sons Stanton of Englewood and Daniel living north of Valparatoo. Mrs Dillingham lay near death, with friends believing she will soon join him.
Benjamin P Scott of Valparaiso died at 4 PM Saturday of pneumonia at age 82. He was the father of Mrs. Lillian Cadwell, a local music teacher. An old soldier, his pallbearers were members of the G A B post.
The body arrived from a Chicago hospital aboard the Wabash after cancer treatment. Sarah A. Morris, 47, wife of J E Morris of Chicago, was laid to rest at Westville cemetery on Saturday.
Henry G. Neimer died at his Michigan City home on Friday following a week of illness from typhoid fever. He had been traveling for Bord Johnson & Co when symptoms began.
Mrs John Dutton aged 83 died at her home in Vicaraiso. She was one of Porter count oldest residents.
