Kansas City Builder Shot Dead in Cafe Dispute

Chas A Hanson of Kansas City was killed last Saturday noon at Our Way Cafe owned by Chas Bradley after a confrontation over meal tickets for his four employees. Bradley refused, Hanson drew a revolver, and Gus Westfall shot Hanson as Bradley’s aide joined the gunplay. The coroner's inquest returned a verdict that Hanson died from gunshot wounds inflicted non feloniously by Westfall. Hanson, a brick mason and builder, came to Kansas six months ago. little is known of his personal life, and his body was buried in WaKeeney Cemetery after a funeral at Straw's.

Pleasant party hosted at Miss Rosa Spena home

A group of girls gathered Friday evening at Miss Rosa Spena's home for Mildred Meyer's visit. Kathleen Northup and Margaret Pierson served a lawn luncheon. Attendees included Lacey Herrick Mildred Phares Hazel DeBoer Clara Gibson Margaret Acre Elizabeth Parsons Sarah Conley Myrtle Schwanbeck Clara Spena and Mildred Myer. Meyer is a niece of Dr U S Miller.

All the business places of Collyer will close Thursday afternoon September 8 for the purpose of attending the Fair at WaKeeney.

Public Schools set pace. church and social fill week

The community schedules a busy week with high school opening, Christian Endeavor social at F C Wollner's, an ice cream supper at Mrs Atherton's, and a Baptist infant service at the Presbyterian Church. Evening worship resumes, with Endeavor youths moving up. A Wakeeney musical club hosted a lively evening at Gerricks, featuring choruses and solos followed by ice cream. Myron Niesley returns from Connecticut and heads to Cottonwood Falls for the school year.

A county Farmers Educational Union event on the courthouse lawn drew a large crowd for a basket dinner and meetings.
