Rubber Stands Strain Better Than Steel

San Francisco motor caravan on a hard test to the St. Louis Ad Men’s Convention faced snow rain and mud. Four survivors of fourteen reached on schedule while one tire punctured near St Louis and another was worn from the rig. The Goodrich tires on the Studebaker pilot car endured the longest without trouble, driven by Chester N. Weaver of San Francisco.

FIREWORKS AND PATRIOTISM IN 1917

Hussey the State Fire Marshal urges restraint on Independence Day displays. He notes that 1892 people were killed and 42909 wounded by fireworks in fourteen years and argues patriotic displays should conserve powder for the front and protect lives and property.

Child Killed by Horse Near WaKeeney

A child died after a horse incident last Saturday when the rider’s foot tangled in a strap. Mr Yowell tried to free him but the horse jerked, throwing the boy. He died at Hays hospital about three o clock the same day. Burial followed in WaKeeney Cemetery. The community extends sympathy to the Yowell family.

A Penurious Mean Man

A newspaper notes a thief who entered the office Tuesday and stole $1.50 from widow subscription money left on the desk. The item condemns the act as especially mean and jokes about offering $2 to return the funds. It also corrects a mistaken report placing Judge Peacock at an undertakers convention in Hutchinson.

Red Cross Drives County Support Amid War Effort

The Red Cross movement urges all citizens to donate. One dollar suffices to save a soldier, with county goals set near $9000 and Ellis County aiming $20,000. C. H. Benson, president, and Mrs. A. Blair, secretary, lead efforts. members listed include A S Pea and many local residents. Leaders will be appointed in townships to accelerate fundraising nationwide. Mrs. Ben C. Rich of Ogallah visited Mrs. W. C. Olson last Tuesday.

Smells Oil Rumor in Hamilton County Arises

Lawrence reports a Hamilton County resident asked Dr. R C Moore of the University of Kansas about oil near the Kansas Colorado border. Moore says no oil in Hamilton County and explains oil depths elsewhere, noting a state geological survey underway to map drilling activity and prospects, with a comprehensive 250 page report to be released next fall free to Kansas residents.

Record Smash Sets New Transcontinental Pace

Allen T. Bedell completed a record breaking cross country run aboard a Henderson at 26 14 mph covering the distance in 7 days 16 hours 16 minutes, shaving 3 days 19 hours 54 minutes from the prior mark. He also set a transcontinental auto record and earlier broke the world 24 hour record with 1153.5 miles in one day. Ludwig Dietz and others leave for Russell County to work in harvest fields.
