Park officials condemn late night mischief after a band concert as youths pull blossoms from trees scatter litter and run hydrants. City Engineer Zahren confirms damage while Constable Simmons notes growing risk from group gatherings and sexual rumors, urging parental restraint.
The Memorial Day committee met at the Commercial Club to finalize observances. A program of speeches and music includes a street parade to the cemetery and a salute by ex soldiers. The march starts at the city park with groups such as the Band and Old Soldiers. Reverend John W. Berger was asked to deliver a prayer and arrangements for short speeches and vocal numbers are planned. Free conveyances are requested for 9 a.m. to transport Women’s Relief Corps members and others to the cemetery for graveside decorations.
G W Drinkwine abandoned his Wenatchee life selling his real estate and belongings and traveling to California Ida Kennewick and other promised lands in search of a better home. He returned after deciding Wenatchee offered the best prospects and bought five acres across the Wenatchee river from Fuller and Russell for 3700 dollars saying he must start over again. He said he could not find a place equal to Wenatchee and had even sold his furniture.
Louis Crollard witnessed the wreck aboard the G N s No 4 east bound passenger train which arrived yesterday after the incident involving Wenatches people.
Louis Crollard described a collision between two freight cars and a passenger train in a tight tunnel with a sharp curve. Engineers and firemen escaped with one injured legged engineer. wreckage and jammed tracks disrupted service while passengers enjoyed mountain scenery. A ham and bacon car burst open spreading meat along the right of way. A lute player from Wenatchee was seen fleeing with ham.
The Wenatchee High School Junior Class hosted a lively banquet for the Seniors at Ellis-Forde hall. Ladies Guild of St. Luke’s church provided a sumptuous meal while Misses Mildred Finch Irene Austin Sylva Grant Delia Zwight Grate Wiester and Marguerite Wilson served guests. Crollard’s orchestra supplied dance music as the crowd toasted and danced into the night.
Wenatchee theater hosts the amateur Thespians tonight for a four act comedy titled Between the Acts. Students organized advance seat sales and promise a full house with music and laughter.
Information from We natchee reports the Orondo ferry across the Columbia River was destroyed by fire on Sunday night. It was owned and operated by Clyde Trapp. The loss will inconvenience locals who cross at that point. The ferry will be rebuilt at once. Details are scant and the fire’s origin is unknown.
Francis Little of Lakeside notes that the new Chelan butte diggings operate day and night with two shifts. New finds are reported periodically and there is a growing conviction that discoveries continue.
The Wenatchee Valley Fruit Growers association directors hold a private session today. Secretary Balch stated the meeting concerns private matters for the summer and nothing of public interest is being discussed.
The first cherries of the season arrive on display at Wies ter’s store. Grower H. A. Swatwood lives near Orondo and cultivated the fruit on his local farm.
W H Scott ships twenty crates of strawberries to the Sound from the Dick Hill ranch with high prices. Frost hurt late fruit. gooseberries, blackberries, prunes plentiful but frost damaged many crops. Cantaloupes potatoes late crops planted. rain improves grain fields in Horse Heaven and Rattlesnake.
NORTH YAKIMA May 27 Mr and Mrs Walter Chambers and their young daughter were injured when their horse and buggy ran away for blocks. Mr Chambers and the child escaped with slight injuries while Mrs Chambers, taken to the hospital, is in critical condition with internal injuries.
At Morristown Indiana on the Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton line one mile east of town a fast passenger train struck a bridge over the river. Frank St. John Orville Babb and John Fairchild were seated on the railing when the train surged into the river, resulting in three deaths.
All Knights of Pythias are requested to meet at Bower hall on Thursday morning May 30 at 8 a m sharp to attend in body memorial services at the cemetery. Bring badges and floral contributions by order of Special Committee.
The Columbia river highway bridge near Wenatchee faces delays after high water tore out falsework and left steel spans sagging. Contractors report safety concerns, but observers say the structure is not imminently endangered and work will resume after river levels subside.
Judge Tallman is building a fine bungalow near town and M. O. Torrence plans a large new house on a growing street. An apron contest on Wednesday crowned Mrs Beesley best dressed and Mrs Torrence most serviceable. The Silver Medal contest at the M E church featured several young contestants with Bert Hanan winning. Union Memorial services at the M E church were led by Rev A T Raab with praise for his handling of the sermon.
