Wenatchee prepares a two day Fourth celebration with a loud city feel. Committees race to organize stunts, money is being raised quickly, music and speeches will mark the day. Plans include patriotic songs by local singers and limits on firework activity to a few hours.
Five diphtheria cases in a single family sparked county health action. Dr. Hoxsty and Dr. Gilchrist confirmed the mild form, leading to closure of public schools and bans on gatherings. Two children died, others treated with antitoxin and quarantined. no clear spread yet.
Chelan leader notes rising gold yields as prospecting broadens the new field. S Fournier, who located the first claim, returns with gold bearing rock and washed gold from a dirt ledge. Miners drift 12 to 15 feet on a promising seam seven inches exposed, widening to 5% feet at seven feet depth.
L N Pershall and M M Kingman report uncovering quartz richer in gold than last week while preparing a large scale development plan. They removed ore and delivered lumber for a house as they advance claim work. Other locators are active but have not matched the two finds yet. milling ore has been found.
Two freight trains collided head on near the east entrance of the Cascade Tunnel at 11 last night. An operator misread an order, causing the wreck with derailed cars and torn track over a hundred feet. No fatalities reported though rolling stock losses are high. traffic is blocked and No. 4 eastbound passenger is expected at 2 PM.
Ephrata again leads in horse commerce after a spring roundup shipping 23 carloads of horses last week. Seventeen carloads go to the Dakotas and one to Missouri, signaling a renewed era for the local equine market despite forecasts of its decline.
A large raft belonging to Lamb-Davis Lumber Co of Leavenworth is drifting down the Wenatchee River this week. The massive logs, hauled by Leavenworth lumber men, are expected to arrive in town today for processing or sale.
Dr W Kenney secretary of the Olympia Brewing company visited Wenatchee Saturday. He has been at Soap Lake Sanitarium for weeks receiving rheumatism treatment and reports remarkable improvements. He praises the sanatorium and its reputed curative lagoon.
J. B. Bolin of Ephrata is named forest guard and travels to Entiat country to begin duties under Forest Service Superintendent Shelter.
Allen Wetsel of Little and Wetsel returned from Waterville country Saturday with a sizable herd of cattle. The buyers supplying beef for the enterprising firm loaded stock from the highland wheat country for market.
Odessa Washington reports 663 667 bushels received this season with 320 000 ground into flour and 3 200 stored in warehouses. Farmers still hold about 1 000 600 bushels. 1905 06 local receipts reached 1 200 000. hot winds reduced weight per bushel by four to six pounds, yet Odessa remains the region's largest primary wheat receiver on the Great Northern line.
The case against Olds and Wheeler for negligently allowing irrigation water to overflow onto the public highway was set for a demurrer hearing before Justice Palmer but was continued to Friday due to the absence of Prosecuting Attorney Crass.
Captains Whitney and Turner United States inspectors of boilers and hulls visited Wenatchee Saturday to inspect Columbia and Okanogan Steam Boat Company steamers. They reported the boats to be in good condition. Captain Turner is noted for investigating the wreck of the palatial Dakota lost off the coast of Japan on March 5.
The C. and O. company plans to commission the river steamer Okanogan in July. Construction proceeds despite material delays from the Sound and timber shipments. high river water has allowed hull launching to be unnecessary.
In Cincinnati on May 25 Stella Regan age 15 and Alice Smith age 16 leapt from a Convent of the Good Shepherd window on Price Hill. They suffered injuries including a broken arm and bruised legs for Regan and internal injuries for Smith. Officers Kuhn and Ryan found them near Central Avenue as dawn approached. They explained they fled to reach their father William Smith at Fifth and Smith streets and that this was their first exposure to life beyond the institution.
The Smith girl described indifference to death as they leaped forty feet. Both girls survived the fall but were taken to the city hospital for treatment.
The steamer Chelan, laid up for repairs due to a blown cylinder head, will resume her run on Wednesday next. During her absence the North Star operated her route. A new casting was required for the Chelan to restore service.
In Spokane on May 25 the Whitman Adams and Franklin county sheriffs with about 100 men surrounded two suspects, James Moore and Lee Howard, hiding in rocks along Rock Creek near Milan Still place. The pair had earlier eluded authorities across Adams county after robbing farmers and taking horses. One man is reportedly wounded. officers plan to shoot to kill if resistance rises. George Howard was arrested at Winona while the chase drew crowds.
North Yakima will hold a Fruit Day in September with at least 1090 in prizes. The Yakima Boosters and commercial club publicity committee will run the event to attract new settlers from distant points and reward large immigrant families and new fruit samples. Elaborate ceremonies and eastern ads aim to make Fruit Day an annual North Yakima affair.
The Presbyterian General Assembly nears adjournment as the marriage and divorce committee adopts a resolution requiring ministers to refuse to marry divorced persons except innocents who obtain divorce on scriptural grounds, and only after a one year waiting period.
