Appalling winter disaster strikes Larchmont near Block Island
A lifeboat from the Larchmont drifted into Block Island harbor with at least 150 aboard. Forty eight bodies recovered and nineteen survivors indicate a total loss likely near 150 to 175 as midnight counts, while 138 remain unaccounted for. The collision with the schooner Harry Knowlton tore a huge hole and the ship sank within minutes in near zero temperature.
