Efran Rodriguez, 41, shot while deputies served a mental health warrant in Collingsworth County. He fled into a residence with a shotgun, fired at officers, and was shot as officers entered. He was transported to Collingsworth General and then flown to NWTH Amarillo. Texas Ranger Leo Hickman investigates.
The Wellington event on Saturday June 10 begins at 10 a.m. at the courthouse with prayer and the theme bring a little Heaven to earth. Ellison Park hosts entertainment at 2 p.m. and burgers at 4 p.m. The Blackwood Brothers Quartet perform at 6 p.m. with no admission, a love offering may be given.
Ten volunteers completed the Emergency Care Attendant program to become certified ECAs. The 60 hour course, which started February 20, ran in bi weekly sessions through April 12 at the Farm Bureau office building. Names of completers include John Birkey Jeff Thomas Elmer Keller Jerry Watson Philippa Mendoza David Torrez Sandy Covey Robin Briggs John Fletcher and Michael Breedlove Randy McGill attended Childress sessions and finished 150 credits.
Mary Jones completes fourteen years serving students with special needs in the Wellington Independent School System. She recalls a lifelong dream of teaching from first grade and reflects on faith guiding her career, ethics, and the belief that love and individualized principles empower learning.
The First United Methodist Church of Wellington begins a revival on Sunday June 11 2000 at 11 am. The speaker is Rev Stan Cosby of Tulsa Oklahoma a Panhandle High School graduate and McMurry University alum. The theme is The person and work of the Holy Spirit with services 11 am and 7 pm on Sunday and 7 pm Monday and Tuesday.
Wellington EMS President Billy Neeley announced a matching grant of 35000 for a new ambulance. The 2000 McMay Miller Medic 163 SE Ford E450 costs 71929 and the Stryker Rugged EZPRO2 unit 3255.75. Total 75184.50 with 40184.50 remaining after the grant. Councilmen agreed to split the balance with the county and WEMS. The last meeting discussed retired but active fire personnel.
Wellington Independent School District board met in special session on June 2 2000 to hire Don Hinsley as junior high principal by unanimous vote. Eric Sprinkle and Jodi Sprinkle named as math teacher coach and teacher respectively. Two new computer labs approved. Adjourned at 12 20 pm with six trustees and several district staff present.
Jaimes and Taylor will represent Wellington at the Last Annual Greenbelt Bowl All-Star Classic in Childress on Saturday June 10. Pre game ceremonies begin at 6 30 p m with the game at 7 p m Elvis Jaimes 5 10 230 lb WHS graduate will play for the Skyrockets and select Ashley Taylor for the queen pageant Friday June 9 8 30 p m at the Childress Junior High School Auditorium Yanci Yarbrough Miss Texas will MC and sing the national anthem at halftime the Greenbelt Bowl Queen will be named at halftime Tickets are 4 in advance from the Childress Chamber of Commerce and 5 at the gate.
The Wellington Opportunity Center will open its summer youth program on June 12, 2000, running weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through June and July for children who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade. The staff includes Cristin Davis, Marnie Kane, Varietta Massey, and Ruby Williams with Swarm Foundation funding. A sack sale fundraiser is planned for Saturday June 17 at the Center to cover meals, snacks, and craft supplies.
Ruby Williams of Wellington Elementary retires after a 14 year tenure in first grade. She began with WISD in 1975, earned an associate degree from Clarendon College and a BS from West Texas A&M University, and taught in Title Reading before dedicating the last 14 years to first grade.
