Norwood valedictorian Lacey Decker earns multiple honors

Lacey Decker of Norwood and Sumnerwood is named valedictorian for 2000 and receives the Honor Graduate Certificate from the Texas Education Agency. She also earns the Delta Kappa Gamma scholarship, a Northeast Panhandle Teachers Credit Union scholarship, the Ozette Rainey Memorial Scholarship, and the Amarillo Globe News Celebrate 2000 scholarship. Additional recognition includes Legacy and residence hall scholarships from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, the Collingsworth County Crime Stoppers High Achiever award, the 2000 Superintendent's Award, Health Award, Government Award, the Fighting Heart Award, and selection to the All-District Academic Team and the All-District basketball second team.

Texas A&M hires entomologist Charles T. Allen as program director

Charles T. Allen, an entomologist with the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, is named program director of the Texas Bull Weevil Eradication Foundation. He succeeds Osama El-Lissy, who moves to USDA cotton pest programs. Allen holds a PhD from LSU and has long service in Texas and Arkansas extension work.

Norwood Exes Plan July 15 Reunion

The Sumnerwood Ex-student reunion of 2000 is scheduled for Saturday, July 15. Each class will organize parties and exes should contact a classmate for details. Directories print in early June. amendments should be sent promptly. Newsletters with final plans go out next month.

McMurry’s Cheyenne Oldham Earns DIII All American Honor

After placing fifth in the 4X100 at the NCAA Championships in Naperville Illinois the McMurry University sprinter Cheyenne Oldham earned NCAA Division III All American honors. The 4X100 team set a school record with 47.83 seconds. Lincoln University won in 46.87. Teammates include TaKosha Ragsdale Sabrina Griffin and Talitha Belcher. Oldham also helps McMurry’s national qualifying 4X400 relay. The Cowboys and Ladies teams earned seven All-Americans overall. Oldham is the daughter of Gary and LaDonna Oldham and a Sumnerwood High School graduate.

Veterans Memorial Day Observance Honors Local VFW and Korean War Milestone

Community memberss gather for Memorial Day events held by VFW Glynn Moore Post 6439 and the ladies auxiliary to honor living and fallen veterans. The 50th anniversary of the Korean Conflict is noted as poppies funds aid local disabled veterans and families. Edna Wooldridge and Esta Glenn chaired the observance with extensive participation and a county style breakfast after flag placements. Memorial Day services featured 600 flags at cemeteries and a concluding service at the Veteran's Monument.
