Mrs Gibbs Glenn Dies Suddenly in June at Wellington

Mrs Gibbs Glenn a prominent county farming family member died Thursday afternoon June 1 at St Josephs Hospital after entering previous day. She was born December 19 1885 in Springfield Missouri and married to Mr Glenn on November 8 1908 in Clarendon. Funeral services were held at First Methodist Church. Burial in West Wellington Cemetery. Survived by four daughters two sons and numerous grandchildren great grandchildren.

Wellington State Guard Unit Held Inspection

The Wellington State Guard, a Texas State Guard unit, was inspected on a Tuesday in May by Col I Kawaster from the Adjutant General’s office. Capt Jimmy Cochran said the inactive unit will be tested, aims to recruit, and consists mainly of World War II veterans. The group, not subject to active duty, would assume state equipment if needed and emergency powers. Current members include Capt Cochran, City Council members, Sheriff John Rainey, and Police Chief Donald Nunnelley.

Group Attends ASCS Meeting in Amarillo

Millard Brown, Mrs. Nick Pichards, Mrs. Tom Wilkins and Mrs. Guy Qwens went to Amarillo on Tuesday June 6 for a state office organized meeting at the Herring Hotel. The session covered automation and new machines for payments on current government programs.

Plans Ready for June 8 Hopper Meet

Plans are complete for a grasshopper control meeting set for Thursday morning June 8 in the Farm Bureau Building. County agent Sammy Helmers, Jack Moreman in charge, and Forest Preston of the USDA will outline a cost share program for aerial spraying and identify critical areas along the west side and in the northeast and southeast corners.

West Texas Billboard Promotes Tourism Extension

The West Texas Chamber of Commerce promotes a billboard program highlighting lakes suites national parks landmarks museums and mountain ranges. The project is the second phase of the West Texas tourist development plan following the magazine This Is West Texas. PanTex Outdoor Advertising donated space on Highway 83 North.

Wellington High Band Heads to Texas State Contest

Sixteen Wellington High School musicians compete in solo and ensemble events at the Texas Interscholastic League Band contest in Austin with director James Larson. Soloists include Brenda Baha David Groves Jamie Larson and four quartets perform with accompanists Regina Karnes Elaine Karnes and others. The group aims for Division One and plans a tour of Austin sites after the contest.

Dodson Legion Installs 1967-68 Officers Tuesday

The Dodson American Legion Post installed officers for 1967-68 Tuesday evening in the Dodson park. Claude’s Ba Brady, 18th District viet commander, officiated the ceremony. The slate included Dennis Holland as commander and J. D. Luck as vice commander along with Tucker adjutant Hightower chaplain Truett Holland and Boos Martin sergeant at arms. This marks the third year of service for the officers. A hot dog and chili supper accompanied the event.

Mrs Ingram in Hospital Transfer to Amarillo

Mrs John Ingram, formerly at St. Joseph's Hospital, is a patient in Northwest Texas Hospital Amarillo for observation and tests. She was moved there Saturday and her return date is not known.

Wellington Names Amonett New Football Coach

Wellington High School introduces Thayne Amonett as its new head football coach. The Texas High School Coaches Association will honor him at the San Antonio meeting from July 30 to August 3. He plans to move with his family to Wellington after June 15 and by June 30 at the latest.

Becky Brewer to Represent Wellington in Miss Childress Contest

Becky Brewer former Miss Wellington will represent the town in the Miss Childress contest on Saturday June 0 in Childress. Wellington Taycees sponsor Brewer entry while Childress Sayeees support the Childress event. Others include Esteline and Quenah from Wellington with Childress entrants competing at the Childress Auditorium. Tickets are sold by Jaycee members and the winner advances to Miss Texas later this summer.

Construction to widen US 83 from Wellington to Childress line

Work begins Monday June 12 on widening US 83 from Wellington south to the Childress County line. Cooper and Woodruff of Amarillo hold the contract. Orville Coyle, Texas Highway Department engineer, says about five months to complete with 26 foot travel surface and 8 foot paved shoulders. Traffic will be through with caution. several culverts widened. additional jobs expected locally.

June Popwell competes in the Texas IL Roundup at College Station after winning the district lon test in her division. Accompanied by Leta Kees, she represents the county 4 H efforts at the state contest titled Texas Mash. Miss Mantyn VandDerbur, a former Miss America, joins 4 H Roundup activities as a guest lecturer for General Motors.

Wellington Woman Reunites with Family After 41 Years

Mrs. J. W. Emmert, once separated from her parents and siblings as a child, traveled from Wellington to New York with her daughter Lena to meet sister and brother she had never seen. She and relatives stayed with extended family, learned of a brother in Callingsworth County, and exchanged memories of their early life. The journey included visits to West Bloomfield and reunions with relatives in Seneca Castle and Cundango.
