National Guard Battery Heads to Fort Hood Camp

Twenty seven men and three officers from Battery A 131st Artillery 49th Armored Division plan a two week summer camp at Fort Hood. An advance detachment led by Supply Sgt Troy Marsh leaves Thursday. rest depart Saturday afternoon. Two external officers join Capt Chappell for training under simulated combat conditions.

Murder Charge Filed After Stabbing Death in St Joseph County

William Bowen Jr. died at St Joseph's Hospital from stab wounds suffered at his home in the Flats. His wife Bernice Jefferson Bowen, 36, was arraigned on a malice murder charge, waived exam, and posted $2,500 bond before being released. The weapon remains missing. Bowen once worked as a professional boxer. Deputy Heaton and Police Chief Nunnelley assisted.

Grasshopper Control Meeting Planned in County

A June 8 meeting in the Farm Bureau building will organize a federal state farmer grasshopper control program. County Agent Sammy Helmers, with USDA’s Forest Preston, names three infestation hot spots in Collingsworth County and invites Farmers and ranchers from Wheeler Gray Donley Hall and Childress counties to join.

Cotton farmers reject transfer of acreage outside Collingsworth County

In Collingsworth County the 1968 cotton allotment transfer referendum failed by 73 percent. Some 144 producers favored a transfer, while 385 opposed it. Farmers may still transfer allotments within the county or between counties for their own farms.

Rainfall totals and hail across Wellington area noted

The Wellington Leader reports general weekend rainfall across the county with amounts up to 2.5 inches in some places and as little as 0.5 inch elsewhere. Wheat harvest delays in Dodson, moisture beneficial for cotton, and scattered light hail observed in several locales. Wellington totals reach about 1.51 inches since Sunday night with scattered higher amounts in Wodson and Love areas.

Wellington Readies First Big 4-H Junior Rodeo Weekender

Wellington hosts its first 4-H Club Junior Rodeo at the VFW grounds with two 7 p.m. performances Friday and Saturday and a downtown parade at 4 p.m. Friday led by the Wellington 4-H Riding Club. Dodson Fans Visit Giants at the Astrodome

Twenty one Dodson residents traveled by chartered bus to Houston to watch the San Francisco Giants play at the Astrodome. They saw NASA scenes, the Union Equity elevator terminal, Rice University, Galveston, and the San Jacinto Monument. They met Lindy McDaniel briefly and spent time with his family. The Giants and Astros split two games, a third meeting was Astros versus Pirates, and a NASA tour included a duplicate control room for space flights.

Team Assignments Set After Friday Baseball Meeting
