The Springfield commission accepted Artist Bock of Chicago's design for a granite obelisk 25 feet high with a bronze eagle and draped flag. If funded by the legislature, the monument will bear the words State of Illinois and a bronze artillery group below the inscription So commemorate the sons who gave their lives to perpetuate her honor and her glory.

The New York World proprietor Joseph Pulitzer’s East Fifty fifth street mansion burned, killing two women and injuring others. Mrs. Pulitzer woke early, saved her children Edith and Constance, while the governess Miss Elisabeth Montgomery perished. The origin remains unknown. the loss estimated at 300000 dollars with valuables, including a historic library, destroyed. Firemen suffered minor injuries when flooring collapsed during the blaze.
