Dispatch from Peoria reports intense activity in a case involving Peoria asylum trustees charged with irregularities in their duties during the Peoria asylum for the incurably insane’s construction. Judge Worthington urged a fearless grand jury inquiry, while Atty Gen Aiken arrived to aid the slaves attorney in bringing the case to the grand jury.
The Illinois Corn Growers association held a two day session at the University of Illinois agricultural rooms. F O Foreman president and J I Beagley secretary attended with many corn growers. The executive committee decided to hold a corn exposition next fall at a site chosen by the association. Peorin, who managed the previous corn carnival, earned about 12000 for the exhibit. The score card for corn was revised.
Bernard Huering a Quint painter who lived alone was missing for about two weeks but had told friends he planned to leave the city. He was found dead in his room and appeared to have been dead for at least two weeks.
Joseph Roller fatally shot Sandy Dillinger in Dunfermline Fulton County after a dog belonging to Dillinger barked and prompted Roller to open fire. Sheriff reports the incident as a fatal shooting with investigation ongoing.
Washington January 18 report on Brig ham H Roberts of Utah shows a divided house committee. The majority favors excluding Roberts on polygamy grounds, while a minority argues for seating him on credentials pending expulsion. The vote on exclusion passed with 4-2 party lines, leading to a pending majority report and a minority view to be submitted. Separately Catchings introduces a bill to form a five member commission to adjudicate Cuban damages claims.
The commerce committee reports favorably a bill extending to May 21, 1900 the time for work on the railroad bridge across the Illinois near Grafton. Lee Brosy Peoria's oldest pet house proprietor faces voluntary bankruptcy. A six year old, Louis Randolph, dies after choking at dinner. Thorpe of the American Midland announces a civil road plan linking Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, and Pearis.
