Victory at Sunnyside clears Boer laager near Belmont

Cape Town reports Col. Pilcher’s force defeated a hostile command at Sunnyside laager on January 1. Torontos and Queenslanders bore heavy fire, but captured 35 Boers, four tents, wagons, rifles, ammunition, and papers. Two privates killed and Lieut. Adie wounded. Boers later attacked Colesberg, with British forces repulsed and heavy losses reported.

Government's December finances show surplus and higher receipts

The government reports December 1899 receipts of 46.76 million against 41.40 million a year earlier, expenditures of 29.15 million, leaving a 7.61 million surplus versus a 460 thousand deficit in 1898. Six month totals yield a 21.03 million surplus.

Public Debt Statement Shows Decrease in December

Washington reports the monthly public debt for December 30 1899 at 1 134 300 007 after cash in treasury. The drop of 5 791 824 is largely due to bond purchases. Total debt 1 417 895 460 with details on interest bearing and non interest bearing components and cash on hand 1 048 006 041. Net cash balance 283 595 453 after liabilities 764 410 588.

Governor Taylor Urges Repeal of Goebel Law in Long Message

Gov. W. S. Taylor in Frankfort submitted a 7000 word message condemning the Goebel election law as an 1898 infamy. He argued disfranchisement and biased counting, warned against one party domination of elections, and urged a new state capitol, lynching and mob laws, and prohibition of cigarettes.
