On the night of the 24th five persons were killed and a number injured when an electric car jumped the track at a sharp curve at the foot of the high mountain between Allentown and Coopersburg Pennsylvania. The accident was caused by wet rails and snow. The late flood is estimated to have damaged Lehigh Valley Railroad Co. property by $260,000.
Washington reports yellow fever was conquered by U S Army findings that mosquitoes transmit the disease. Havana measures against infected mosquitoes reduced November deaths and cases, with only five cases this year compared to historic averages. Officials deem Havana freed from yellow fever after long campaigns and improved sanitation.

St. Joseph Mo December 26 The first Christian Daily newspaper in the world will be established in Tokio Japan by a native U Koch who is in the United States making purchases for equipment. He has concluded negotiations for part of a newspaper property in this city and will buy the balance in Chicago.
Illinois state news lists dozens of obituary notices for elderly settlers and prominent locals across counties from Dix to Bureau. Entries include Mrs Mary A Milburn of Dix age 90, Captain Thomas OHarra of Peoria 64, Judge Damon Tunnicliffe of Macomb 79, and W H Bass of Bureau County 87, among others with ages and brief descriptors. The item notes eight years since the Basses celebrated their golden wedding.
The state Board of Equalization reports a net increase of $187,000,000 over last year’s assessment for 1901, led by rises in personal property and Chicago elevated roads. The Battery A mascot Dewey, a bulf Pekincock and symbol of Ili nois, served with the unit during the Cuban campaign and logged 7,660 miles with the battery before dying of old age.
President Proctor of the Civil Service Commission states that Edgar S. Maclay’s removal from the Brooklyn Navy Yard was not a violation of civil service law. The Navy directed the action via Secretary Long, with the commission noting removal for just cause and not on political or religious grounds.
London December 27 dispatch from Lord Kitchener dated Johannesburg reports Gen. Rundle says on the night of December 24 Colt Firman’s camp at Reefontein with three Yeomanry companies and two guns was rushed by a De Wet commando. Casualties feared heavy. Two light horse regiments are moving.
