A 36 member general committee for a labor and capital confab met in New York to draft plan and scope. Senator Hanna heads the employers group. Samuel Gompers leads the labor representatives with Oscar Strauss as chair and Ralph Easley as secretary.
Boston December 19 The World's Union of Christian Endeavor was incorporated in Massachusetts. Rev Francis E Clark was named president J Willis Baer secretary and William Shaw treasurer. The United Society reported 61 920 societies and 3 820 000 members. Clark noted growth worldwide including 480 50 in Madras India and rising interest in Japan China Germany Portugal and other countries as leaders prepared to travel for campaigns.
Capt Dias Moren of the Colon recounts the Santiago battle noting Sampson could not actively engage as his ship lay 12 miles west of the harbor. Schley with the Brooklyn and Iowa led the port defenses while the Maria Teresa burned. Moren credits Schley for the opening actions and Oregon’s speed for the ultimate defeat of the Vizcaya and Maria Teresa.
