Cuban Refugees Seek Help from Churches in Miami

Cuban refugees arriving in Miami at 4000 monthly increasingly rely on churches for aid. The Southern Baptist Hispanic Center urges nationwide clothing and food donations. Since 1959 the center has distributed garments to 42000 refugees and food to 76000, with medical care for nearly 100000. The Catholic Hispanic Center reports 11,000 refugees receive federal aid while others are helped by Methodist, Episcopal, and Presbyterian centers.

Reserve credit payments barred for retirees proposal

A House bill NR 5250 would allow enlisted men to earn reserve service points toward retirement on a similar 1958 officer system. About 7000 current Army retirees would be affected in year one. Automatic future crediting would occur at retirement, with retirees already retired needing to apply. The plan aims to boost retired pay by roughly 24 percent per year for many, using 20 years active duty as a qualification threshold.

Dover man charged with assault at tavern

James Sewell, 26, of RD 2 Dover, was charged yesterday in northern district court with assault and battery. affidavit by Richard Mercer of RD 2 Dover. Sewell posted a $200 bond, gave no plea, hearing not yet scheduled. The incident reportedly occurred August 27 at a tavern.

Fire and vehicle blaze disrupt Dennison and Newcomerstown

Fire crews responded yesterday at 0:10 am to 416 N 4th where Mrs Regina Boor fainted and a doctor was summoned. At 12:20 pm a pump truck moved to 713 Grant St to fight a blaze on a 2 wheel trailer owned by Jack Grove causing $74 damage. Rosella Pay of Akron drove to an incident on Spracenee where a cigaret ignited a 10 inch hole in her car seat. Meanwhile a grass fire event occurred on Mrs Walter Highin s property.
