A chaotic miscellany from Wooster area reports pensions, railways, deaths, births, marriages, legal cases, and education updates. Notables include John Saddler’s Cleveland death, Alewife family, teacherCertificates for Fiscus Stinson Sommer, a Massillon to Wooster electric line bid, and various court actions and local business moves.
At a Wooster meeting the Wooster two Sunday School Association executive committees named Rally Day committees for an event at Wooster City Park. Park committee chairs John Schultz and Frank Horn. Speakers and Singers with Charlee Langell as chair. Music chaired by H F Crow. Parade chaired by Thomas A Elder. Exercises chaired by Prof J H Diskasoxz. The day depends on committee progress and a report to Dr. Elder's office Friday evening.
Freshman class banquet at First Presbyterian church honored by seniors and sophomores amid a campus fund drive. Toasts and poems filled the evening as students recalled a year of events while funds were directed toward the university building fund. Speakers named include James Harvey Whitcraft and Rutledge Kenneth Shaw, with verses and songs marking the farewell tone.
Rev J H Deeds pastor of the Wooster M E Church will speak to the High School graduates Sunday evening June 8. The class lists 18 girls and 20 boys with the boys in the majority. Editors of the annual are Rowland Curry and Donald Foss, among others.
Probate actions heard before Judge B L Adair include guardianship inventories and final accounts for multiple estates. Filings cover estates of Hartzler Young Hallery Carroll Happer Eberly Brenneman Mumaw Fasig Brenneman Byler Miller and others with hearings set for June 6 and July 3, plus adoption and real estate sale orders and bond notices.
Estate proceedings list numerous administrators filing inventories appraisements and accounts. Private sales and real estate sales are approved or confirmed with deeds ordered. Hearings set for July 3 and 21, guardians report sales and estates, and a patient at Massillon State Hospital is noted.
Captain F C Gerlach of Company D won the election for major of the Third Battalion, Eighth Regiment ONG, last Saturday by a 338 to 228 vote margin over Captain Herman Werner of Akron. This confirms a captain will be elected for Company.
Tools found Tuesday morning south of town at the explosion site. Drilling will be pushed rapidly as oil-saturated rope suggests a viable vein.
Quintin M Gravatt son of H H Gravatt has assumed the duties of editor of the Wayne County Democrat replacing Hon E B Esherman who resigned. Gravatt a Wooster University student and Cuba era veteran is known for his talent and newsroom familiarity with strong support from friends.
A meeting for the Wooster Stone and Sand Co was held Friday night. Directors elected include W. J. Mullins John McSweeney A D Metz Chas McDonald J R Zim merman and L P Ohliger Z IT Duor. The firm will supply sand to Pocock Grasa Co and operate quarries near Killbuck on the C A & C RR. Work to begin soon with officers: President W J Mullins Vice President John McSweeney Secretary Chas McDonald Treasurer L P Obliger Manager Z T Duer.
George Young aged 63 died suddenly Saturday May 24 in his apartments over the galeon on S Market Street. Death caused by apoplexy. Born in Holmes County he had lived in Wooster about 40 years. Survived by Mrs J Ruenell Mrs A W McConnell Harry Pearl Nellie and John Young all of Wooster except Mrs McConnell of Cleveland.
NEW PITTSBURG notes visitors and travels across Medina county and nearby areas. George Hetfelfinger and wife plus W oH Barnhart and family spent the week’s start in Medina county. Mr and Mrs Snader visited Ashland. Foster Watt and wife from Cleveland paid calls. Mrs Freund of Cleveland stayed with J M Weaver family. Robert Jackson and George Jackson with family visited John W Jackson in Sabbath. Clem and Harry Jackson spent the Sabbath at home.
Isaac Johnson died May 23 and was buried May 26. Funeral at home led by Rev G S Hackett. Interment in Fredericksburg. Mrs. Johnson long a Presbyterian member. Grandfather Hunter died May 24. funeral at home May 26. Cancer patient. Mrs Hamaker of Canton visited en route from Mr Painter’s funeral in Holmeville. School directors named Klein G Lashaw Smedley.
