Straitsville reports a mine on fire valued at $250000. Other items note Washington's birthday events, a skating carnival, exams at No 3 school, D C Curry resuming Wooster Refrigerator Works, and upcoming Jefferson band concerts at Maple Grove and No 9 school houses.
J. W. Troutman of Madisonburg says his 5 acre plantings produced over a thousand dollars worth of potatoes and wheat in two successive years 81 and 82. In 84 his crop on 715 acres yielded about 1400 bushels of potatoes.
Marr ied at the bride s home in Millbrook Wayne County January 29 1885 Reverend H McLaughlin assisted by Reverend W F Slocum of Worcester united James M McKay of Brookfield Trumbull County and Allie Rayl of Millbrook in marriage.

Nearly two hundred guests attended a grand surprise party last Thursday at the elegant home of Mr. R. B. Wasson, five miles northwest of Wooster. A big dinner and fine music by the New Pittsburg band marked the event, and Judge Isaac Johnson presented Mr. Wasson with a gold headed cane amid speeches by Col. Benj. Eason and Hon. John McSweeney.

Two suspicious men were arrested at Mansfield with burglar tools. One bore a fresh bullet wound in the right breast, believed to be the victim of Reason Brown during a prior burglary at Noah Brown's Applecreek area home. Also notes a Sabbath freight train collision on the N Y P O R R between Gregton and Burbank. engineers and firemen escaped injury.
Six contestants Greenlee Donaldson Leonard Orr Lee and Weaver compete in the fourth annual preliminary oratorical contest at College Chapel on Saturday evening February 7. The winner will represent the University of Wooster at the State Oratorical Association in Oberlin. Judges are Dr Hunt Fred J Mullins and Rev Zartman. The Inter State Contest will be in Columbus in May.
During the Curry fire last Thursday night a hook slipped while tearing down a tower near the Engine house. A hook struck Joseph Shively on the ankle, crushing bones and tearing flesh. Amputation was feared but saving the leg now seems possible though he faces lifelong disability. Shively absolves the Hook and Ladder Company of blame.
William S Flattery of Wooster enlarges operations by purchasing ten acres north of town and renaming the business Ak Ridge Nursery. He plans a larger volume of work this year and offers mail order seed sales with a guarantee of safe arrival to patrons.
The Feb edition of the standard records a wedding at the St a residence in Wooster with Rev. P M Semple officiating. James M Westcott son of the late Dr James Westcott of Mt Eaton married Emma Sauvain of Dalton. The ceremony echoed a prior officiation forty years earlier of the groom's parents by the same minister.
Rev Geo W Pepper will preach a sermon at Trinity M E Church next Sunday evening on The tragedy of crime as suggested by recent events at home and abroad. Wernor Portman's tin and stove store in Massillon was burglarized Thursday night with $60 in items and cash. A sleighing party of Wooster youths visited Mr and Mrs Taggart near Wooster last Wednesday evening and praised their hospitality.

Jacob Hines, a 68 year Plain Township resident, died at home Wednesday evening January 28 1885 aged 70 years 6 months 21 days. Born in Pennsylvania he moved to Ohio with his parents in 1816 and joined Maple Grove church in 1849. He leaves a wife and three children. Funeral by Rev F H Huntsberger was held at Maple Grove church Friday January 30. One by one past landmarks are passing away.
John McQuigg Sr aged about 79 died Sabbath evening three miles west of Wooster after a life as a steady farmer and Christian. Born in County Antrim Ireland he emigrated forty years ago to Wayne County with a nine child family and widow. He belonged to the United Presbyterian Church of Wooster and his body rests with a large funeral held Wednesday conducted by Rev R A Gilfillan of the U P Congregation.
A large planing mill on East Street owned by D. C. Curry was nearly ruined by a Thursday evening blaze. Firemen faced scarce water supply and freezing conditions yet prevented total spread. Loss estimated 18 000 to 20 000 with insurers listed. About fifteen workers lost steady employment. The cause remains unclear with theories of stove origin or incendiary action. Citizens urged investigation and fire-protection improvements.
