Wooster considers a $20000 cash and site offer from Pocock glass interests to build a new factory. Massillon investors seek expansion while another Ohio town bids $25000 and land. If Wooster raises funds in thirteen days, construction could start in May and factory operation begin by September with a $180000 yearly payroll.
Mrs Fredericka Greenawald aged 77 years 8 months 27 days died Saturday night April 12 at the home of her son in law Charles Lautenschlager on South Market Street where she was visiting before moving to Walnut Street. She died of pneumonia after a short illness. Born in Germany she lived most of her life in Wayne County. Husband Henry Greenawald died twenty years ago. Survived by three sons and three daughters. Funeral services Monday at the Lautenschlager home conducted by Rev Thomas of Trinity Lutheran Church assisted by Rev Lowry with music by German Lutheran choir. Pallbearers were Gust Hunsicker Adam Goetz William Muschenich Wm Shibley Henry Haller and Geo Kreiger.
Board of Education on Monday night approved a two story eight room school building for the fourth ward. Plans by J R Webster call for a structure similar to the second ward school. Contract let around May 16 with completion aimed for fall.
The board chose the old schoolhouse site at the corner of W Walnut and W Henry streets. By buying land beside Standard Coach Pad Co and having the city abandon a rear alley they hope to secure a 300 by 180 foot lot with the schoolhouse centered.
Miss Rose Bixler returns home for the summer from Medina. John Brentzer of Beech Grove, formerly of this place, dies at his home on Sabbath. Miss Mabel Hawk leaves for Cleveland for the summer. Mrs. Nettle Litchfield visits Ed Bixler. The C E Society authorizes Prof. Geo Jacot as delegate to the county CE convention at Mt. Raton. B F Hoisington recovers slowly from illness.
Jacob Pontius aged 76 years 8 months died at his son George Pontius home in Orrville April 10. He was born in Baughman and lived in Wayne county all his life. Funeral services were held Saturday morning. Interment Crown Hill cemetery. The ditch supervisor race between John Kope Republican and Eliab Pardy Democrat ended in a tie and was decided by lot in Kope's favor.
The executive committee of the university awarded the main building contract to Henry W Schleuter of Chicago as his bid was the lowest at 76017. Other bids ranged up to 106135 from Simon Small & Co and Ames & Winter. Schleuter plans Wooster area contracts for materials and labor, including 2000000 building brick with Wooster Shale Brick Co and 7000 worth of work with W D McClure. He intends to hire as many Wooster laborers as possible and to finalize painting and plastering deals on return to Wooster.
A list of Wayne County assessors elected at recent elections met at the County Auditor Peckinpaugh’s office to receive their supplies at East Union. Precincts across East Union Canaan Milton Congress and Wooster City are represented with both Democratic and Republican appointees, including Bott Sell Halley Franke and others.
Fred Leesster of Barberton visited his brother William in Plain and on the return trip near Wooster was involved in a runaway crash causing several cuts. Jefferson area sees new and repaired houses, with Mrs Mary Zercher and Kate Alleman mentioned. Rev A D Knapp of Wooster will speak on temperance at the Plain schoolhouse Friday night April 19, inviting a large attendance.
The Ohio Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis will hold a meeting in Cincinnati on April 24. Dr Kinaman of Columbus will speak on Animal Tuberculosis and its relations to human tuberculosis. Dr A Fackler of Cincinnati talks on inherited predisposition, and Dr Joseph Eichberg of Cincinnati discusses the contagiousness of tuberculosis.
Orrville and Wooster areas report new pensions and oaths of office. Worras Rameey becomes county commissioner. a divorce grant. multiple deaths including Mrs. Frantz and Mrs. Graven. Fires, buggy accidents, and a large land purchase for grape cultivation noted. Community events include a teachers' institute and a lecture by Walter Chandler.
Funeral services for Michael J Carroll were held at St Marys Catholic church last Friday in the city. The solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev Father John J Carroll of Reveland with a large congregation and a long list of attending clergy and pallbearers. The Ohio House adopted a memorial resolution honoring Carroll, a member of the 6th and 7th general Assembly from Wayne County. Nearby, Mrs Simon Burkholder died at Center College residence. funeral services were held Monday with interment at Oak Grove.
