Des Moines reports loom of a $1,500,000 salary loss for Iowa school teachers if the influenza quarantine remains two weeks. State education asks Attorney General Havner to decide if boards may pay teachers during enforced quarantine vacation. Des Moines pays about $60,000 monthly. a ruling against boards could cut teacher pay by $30,000. UNCOVER PATRIOTS. Sheldon residents Bussamas and Herzog questioned by military committee for not buying liberty bonds. Bussamas urged $1,000 in bonds and $250 in war savings stamps plus $100 to Red Cross. Herzog pledged $1,200 in bonds, $300 in war savings stamps, and $100 to Red Cross and M. CO. A.
Joe Sedlacek of St Ansgar reports 89 acres of produce including onions 7 335 potatoes 2 500 cabbage 1 600 totaling 10 835. Hog sales from the farm reached 9 481. Sioux City Iowa October 22 Georga A Peterson a soldier in training at Fort Benjamin Harrison Indiana returned to his Sioux Falls South Dakota home yesterday on furlough to visit his bride of a few months It is said she confessed to her intimacy with Lewis Mowry 35 a Sioux Falls businessman Mowry was shot and dangerously wounded by Peterson who also inflicted two great gaping knife wounds one on each cheek of his victim Peterson is enjoying his liberty without bond.
Grundy Center Iowa October 22 The John Brant home nine miles northwest of here in Pleasant Valley township was saddened Sunday night when John Brant and his high year-old daughter died of Spanish influenza. Mr Brant was 49 years old He leaves a widow and four children Burial took place yesterday Vernon Wilson cashier of Grundy National Bank was taken to Garrison for burial yesterday Henrietta Thoren who works in the Wilson home is also very ill of Spanish influenza Capt JoAn C Payton commander of the Salvation Army here has been transferred to Marshalltown and will leave with his family Wednesday for that place Ensign St Nichols of Marshalltown receives the command of the army here He has been a visitor in the city general times and is well known to the army people Prairieburg Iowa October 22 Alton Sporton two-year-old son of Mr and Mrs John Sporton farmers living two miles east of Prairieburg was almost instantly killed Sunday afternoon when he fell from a wagon in the yard The horses became frightened jumped and the child was thrown under the wheels The animals started to run and the wagon wheels passed over the hip and shoulders Death ensued before a physician could arrive
Iowa Falls October 22. Several new influenza cases were reported in the city within 48 hours and two deaths occurred. Howard A L Warner a well known local businessman died after a week of illness. He was born in Greene County in 1883 and moved to town with his parents at age 11. He worked in produce and milling, later ran a livery and bakery business, and for three years engaged in the import and sale of goods. He is survived by his widow three young children his father C L Turner brother C J Turner of this city and a sister in York state. He belonged to the Knights of Pythias and Congregational church. The funeral was held at the home today. The first influenza death was Mrs Earl Simpson Lawrence, wife of S O Lawrence. She was married November 3 of last year and lived at Bur en Win. She leaves a husband a six week old son her parents a sister and a brother in Cherokes Texas. She was born at Grundy Center December 29 1897. The funeral was held at the home yesterday. Australia has extensive forests but limited railway and shipping facilities hinder timber cutting.

Pvt Saroy Neddersen of Des Moines is wounded with degree undetermined. Pvt Edwin S. Dawis of Decorah also listed as wounded. Pvt Otto H. Zager of Kalona and Pvt August W. Kattke of Guttenberg are noted among injured.
In Nashua Ja 22 Mrs George Welch died at home after a week’s illness marking a second pneumonia death in the city within three days. The Welch family including Mr and Mrs Welch and a baby girl were stricken, with others in the household also sick. The baby was moved for care and a sister of Mrs Welch who arrived to help also contracted pneumonia. Repeat pneumonia claimed another local resident, Wred Reasoner, not expected to survive.
