Des Moines Iowa October 8 1918 Governor W L Harding urged firmness in war policy at Plymouth Church addressing families of Hawkeye soldiers. He said the nation would refuse peace terms while Germany fights and must demand unconditional surrender before any talks. He warned against celebrating prematurely and cautioned that peace cries aim to divide public support for liberty loans.
In Sioux City on Saturday evening dealers cut first grade creamery butter to 7 cents a pound from 59 cents, after prices had surged to 63 65 and 67 cents. Shrinking demand and substitutes hurt sales, creating a larger surplus than earlier in the year. Leading dealers and wholesalers met and agreed on further action to address the price tumble.
The good women of Sheridan township ten miles south of Tama invited Tama residents to their church last Thursday for a stried chicken dinner. Over two hundred visited the event, enjoying the meal and social time with friends from the south. Next Thursday the Haven neighborhood women twelve miles southeast invite Tama people for a similar supper, hoping to attract a large turnout.

Charles Pontious of the Twelfth Canadian reserves Seventh company writes from the British Navy to J. P. Pontious in Waterloo about naval service since 1914. He recounts Alexandria Palermo Saloniki and the Dardanelles, describes shell fire and near-misses, and says he chose sea duty over land to aid liberty. He urges others to join and stop hiding.
Sioux City Iowa October 8 mystery surrounds the abduction of six year old Helen Rizner from Leeds last Friday morning. She was carried from her bed by an unknown man after which her father pursued, eight hours later she returned home saying a man drove her near the family residence before she walked the rest of the way. She described a man once linked to her mother’s former suitor, now in Canada, and police continue to investigate.
Dennis E. Enright, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Enright of Manchester, Tama County, died in France after serving at Camp Dodge and Camp Stanley. He left Tama April 24 and landed in France in June, killed September 16 in battle.
Sioux City October 8 The Spanish influenza outbreak has grown so severe at Morningside College that the institution has been closed for a week starting yesterday. Several hundred student officers in training are affected.
Ceci Prim mer of the Great Dukes naval training station is on a seven day furlough visiting his sister in La Porte City. Gwendolyn Williams returns home from her aunt Mrs. Gusun Gardner’s. The Presbyterian Sunday school held its annual picnic Saturday. Miss Mabel Mu Gil entertained children with Chautauqua stories. Ira Richards moved into the former C. A. Fosne house. Mr and Mrs D A Mann and family of Waterloo visited Dr and Mrs G W Fisher. they spent Sunday at Buck cottages. Fred Woodman is ill with Spanish influenza.
Miss Bernadetta Barnes of Cresco is visiting her sister Mrs. Frank Harris. Jack Haymond, once ill with pneumonia at Grant Solman’s home, is reported improving. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hogan and daughter Ghidyg Marie from Jesup spent over Sunday with her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Will Sawyer. Mrs. Ged Angel has gone to Dubuque for a short visit. Alford Brust is in Minnesota on business this week. Pearl Page is in Cedar Rapids on Monday for business.
