Iowa City reports over 150 new Spanish influenza cases among university cadets and civilians. Emergency hospital use expands to care for 200 to 300 more if needed. A military quarantine with bayoneted sentries restricts campus access as doctors and health authorities monitor the crisis.
Washington reports Gen March defended rapid public release of casualty lists saying the War Department lags about 15,000 minor names. In Kansas City a court action on Ruth Shoemaker’s damages against Louis B. Schermerhorn was argued, with an interlocutory $100,000 judgment overruled.
War department tallies total 40 671 dead or wounded including battle and disease losses. Des Moines Oct. 7 Mrs Agl dred Varvey is accused of murdering her husband by pouring kerosene on the corpse and setting fire to the house near the fair ground to cover the crime. She has been indicted on the charge.
A Spring Valley Illinois woman Miss Wate Lawrence reports relief after six bottles of Lydia E Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. The 1918 night of July 18 is tied to a murder charge as the Brand jury hears testimony that Mr and Mrs Harvey were drinking during the tragedy. The victim’s body was found with abdominal injuries from bullets, a shotgun located at the scene, and Mrs Harvey allegedly admitted killing her husband saying she had resolved to do so years prior.

In Iowa City special deputy AL Potter reports two days into a probe into missing liquor from a bootleg raid on Sept 24 and alleged tipsy officers. Officials say 124 pints and three quarts disappeared, 122 pints and three quarts accounted for, with 117 pints and three quarts recovered. Also noted is the death of an elderly local resident in nearby Vinton with surviving widow and two children.
