Bryan Quits Evolution Talk at Brown Amid Student Boos
William Jennings Bryan spoke in Providence at Brown University against teaching evolution, was booed and peppered with questions. After a student repeated a query, Bryan quipped that he would retire before the “fountain of wisdom” on his right, then left the hall amid mixed reactions. He defended faith over science, saying real science does not conflict with religion and that evolution is not truth, insisting he came at his own expense to spread his gospel.
