Boy shoots father in Iowa farmhouse killing him

In Sibley Iowa Carl Jess 15 was jailed for killing Claus Jess his father over spending money disputes. He claimed self defense and said his father abused him and planned the crime while the grandmother and others lived nearby. The case proceeds to the grand jury with a signed confession. Twins Shari and Simon Ash arrested for stealing coal. Simon sentenced to three days, Shari released.

West Union Bank Case is Continued Des Moines

Hearing on the Citizens State bank of West Union appeal was postponed to April 1. Seven members of the trenchment and reform committee attended including Senators Stephenson Foskett Wilson and Representatives Jinley Warrington Rogers O Dornell. Senator Kimball detained in Omaha, Sier White out of state, Wichman ill at home. The bank appeal law requires at least six votes.

Retrenchment Committee Hears Appeal Postponed Hearing

A request to postpone action until a full committee hearing was granted. The hearing included a large West Union business delegation and lawyers for both the state banking department and the appellants.

Polk County Plans Broad Paving and Grading Program

Polk County unveils a summer road project including paving of five tracts and grading five more with initial contracts for paving and grading and a general contract for culverts and bridges. Future lettings include Panola speedway, Camp Dodge to Andrews, Polk City to Madrid, River to River road, and White Pole road. Labor shortages may push some paving into next year while grading bids are expected.

Farm Home Near Grundy Center destroyed by fire

Grundy Center March 17. The home on the farm of Mrs August Steinmeir seven miles northeast of town was destroyed by fire Monday. High winds fanned the flames and only the frame house was saved. Insured for 1350 with household goods 600. replacement cost estimated at 16000. Mrs Steinmeyer and children stay nearby with her brother until a new house is built.

Woman Purchases 320 Acre Iowa Stock Farm Near Allison

Mrs. Bileutje Welland formerly of Clara City Minnesota bought the Iowa Central stock farm near Allison Iowa comprising 320 acres. The farm has two sets of buildings with histories dating back to founder Mr Stout of Dubuque and once employed 30 workers. The original tract once exceeded 1100 acres and raised fast horses and heavy draft stock. She paid 300 dollars per acre totaling 96000 dollars, purchasing from Mrs I M Fisher.

Ames Iowa March 17 The brown tailed moth a major defoliator in New England has been discovered in Iowa by deputy state nursery inspector Henry Ness. He seized and burned nursery stock from France to prevent spread. State entomologist Dr EB Ball warns the moth harms trees and can cause severe stings. this pest is linked to elm deaths.
