Bonds of two I army famud case placed at $1009
Two colored individuals, Himit Jackson and Rose Pratt, were bound over to the federal grand jury in the sum of $1009 each by Commissioner J. S. Dempster of the U S district court. They faced charges of obtaining dependent allotments under false pretenses during wartime service. Jackson claimed Pratt was his sister and dependent, enabling fraudulent monthly added sums and a portion of his pay. Pratt received several hundred dollars via checks, with some funds diverted from Jackson’s pay. Investigations into Red Cross payments reduced Pratt’s actual receipt to $59.60. A warrant was issued by Commissioner Danpater based on information from Special Agent J. F. Porterfield after an extensive inquiry. A. P. Houston, U S deputy marshal, arrived to take custody if ordered. The couple may remain jailed locally for the present. Porterfield warned that those exploiting veterans’ wartime anxieties by claiming unentitled allotments risk imprisonment as the government reviews transactions.
