Des Moines reports federal and state officials plan to discourage long hauls of coal and hogs to favor local distribution. A Chicago conference will guide plans to shift coal use nearer mining areas and support small Iowa packing plants by boosting local hog cattle markets.
Sioux City January 16 Earl Hanson Sloan Indiana was arrested by Sheriff W H Jones to answer to a secret indictment returned by the January grand jury. Hanson allegedly held up a Sloan poker game at mid night after losing about 45 dollars on the table, forcing players to surrender money and pass the hat before departing.
G J Kirsobom of Iowa Falls shot himself in his north city home after a morning dairy delivery. Found by wife and son, coroner deemed no inquest. Father of three, about 57, he left a farm and home, with stomach illness and worries over a drafted son contributing to his act.
Greene Iowa January 16 for the first time in years the town will lack electric lights from midnight to noon for two and a half days as river water runs low. The local power company cannot secure enough coal to run its steam plant, though one is available if needed.

In Des Moines the state dairy and food department warned that butter mergers do not create two pounds of butter from one and cost more than shaving the butter with a knife. Commissioner Barney said mergers emulsify to stretch usage, urging consumption of standard butter instead. The agency also probes cottonseed meal labels and weights after a Downing Indiana sale involved shortages, signaling a renewed campaign on legal food stuffing and sack tagging.
Morris Gervich, a Russian Jew who arrived in Marshalltown with 20 cents 18 years ago, has built a fortune in the junk trade. He bought a $7,750 home, invested 12,000 in a Minnesota farm, and is valued at about 40,000. He came seeking better opportunity after escaping serfdom in Russia and struggled to learn English at first. His start included 92 dollars of gear funded by a friend’s security, and he has since prospered with a wife and five children educated in local schools.
News comes from New York City of the death of Lieut Edward Foster formerly of Marshalltown and Des Moines. He died of scarlet fever while awaiting orders to sail for France after being commissioned in November. Survived by his widow whom he wed in Marshalltown in 1916, Mrs Pearl Keeppel Foster now in Des Moines with her husband's sister. Body to be cremated and ashes sent to Des Moines for burial. Foster would have been 31 in March.
Davenport officials announce night blackouts and strict fuel limits due to shortages. Streetcar service after 7 30 pm cut 60 percent, coal deliveries restricted to one ton per residence, buildings heated to 65 degrees. Actions aim to free coal en route and support rail and power plants amid storm damage. Authorities seek similar measures in East Moline and Rock Island.
