Ackley Man Was Raisers Guard and Immigrant Patriot
August Wille, German-American of Ackley, served in Kaiser’s First Pomerania grenadiers three years, later emigrated to the United States seeking freedom and opportunity. He has two sons in U.S. service, one in aviation and one in the Second Minnesota artillery, and he became a U.S. citizen after arriving in 1891. Wille recalls never having supper for three years as a German soldier, but found prosperity in Iowa. He casts his first presidential vote for McKinley in 1896 and now runs a grain elevator and poultry business, owning two homes and supporting a daughter and two sons in government service.

L H DeFord known as Ham fought with General Custer in Indian battles and died at his Des Moines home at age 66. He worked in the Iowa state insurance department and was a veteran of the Seventh Cavalry, discharged shortly before the Little Bighorn massacre. He is survived by a widow four brothers three sisters a stepson and five stepdaughters.
