Physician Thought Woman Was Single

Dubuque Iowa details a coroners inquest into the death of Mrs. DeForest F. Wolfe of Lansing Indiana. Dr C Allen Styder is charged with murder after allegedly performing an illegal operation on a woman who claimed to be Miss Lee. Evidence shows misrepresentation to the doctor about the woman's single status and statements about pneumonia and an undertaker. The husband D F Wolff and relatives testified to the assertions and the doctor’s cautions while Mrs Wolfe’s mother described seeking treatment.

Mason City Mayor's Daughter Married in Minneapolis

Frank D. Pearce, well known in Mason City and Hampton, wed Mins Afurvyl Potter, daughter of Mayor T. A. Potter. The ceremony took place in Minneapolis. Pearce, son of A. J. Pearce, served in the army and is stationed in Washington DC. He studied at Grinnell and Ames and was Franklin County engineer for three years.

Full Guard Regt Will Be Formed in Iowa

Des Moines reports inspection of new national guard companies under Lieut. Col. Rugedale and Lieut. Cal. Ragsdale, with Company B in Des Moines and Company A in Council Bluffs to be inspected next. Rumor says these units will be mustered into federal service soon, as Gen. Logan plans a new Iowa regiment. Other companies in Mason City and Burlington await official inspection. Maj. Roy W. Des Moines December 8 Harvey Lee labeled the nation s toughest printer remains in California after escaping from Fort Madison Iowa custody. The Iowa board of control says it would cost about 500 to bring him back and offers 300 reward. Lee captured in Sacramento on burglary charges and California officials will prosecute there. He earlier escaped from custody in California, and later escaped jail in Pennsylvania, with various dramatic incidents cited. He claims to be a printer from training school in Hidura then Anamosa and Cedar Rapids conviction.

Toledo Christmas Tree Scaled Back For War Conservation

Toledo Indiana will display its usual municipal Christmas tree but on a smaller scale due to war conservation. Street decorations are reduced and a single tree will be placed on the courthouse square. Children will receive treats while most funds go to holiday dinners clothing and other necessities for needy families. Commercial club committees are coordinating preparations.

Dubuque Iowa December 8 Walter L Schwartz arrested in Linn county as a slacker faces federal grand jury inquiry for violation of the Mann white slave act He may plead guilty if indicted The 29 year old has a criminal record including a Joliet desertion term Paroled to a farmer who later lost control of his wife and five children Schwartz allegedly worked on the farm then fled with the farmer s wife and posed as a schoolteacher introducing the woman as his wife He was jailed as a slacker last September for failure to register and was identified by a Justice Department agent

Destruction of Confiscated Liquor Used to Protect Car

Mason City Iowa police used bonded liquor to prevent a patrol wagon radiator from freezing after confiscations during summer and Fourth of July smuggling profits, a court ordered destruction not carried out until zero temperatures. Vinton Women Exceed YWCA Fund Quota in Drive

Fire destroys home. family escapes in night blaze

Fire spread rapidly and could not be stopped. The entire family escaped in the night. The bus valued between $3,500 and $3,000 with about $1,000 insurance. Most first floor articles saved. upstairs and basement lost. Mr Beresford plans to build a new house in spring.
