Des Moines reports show 93 county and district fairs in Iowa reached a total attendance of 1,245,000 with net profit of 111,568 and total receipts up about 66,000. Expenditures rose, music and attractions costs up, premiums and speed events down. Several towns did not hold fairs this year while others did.

Slaver Slacker Sentenced in White Slave Case

Walter L. Schwartz of Linn County Indiana was sentenced to two and a half years in Fort Leavenworth federal prison after pleading guilty to violating the Mann white slave act. Marble Rock Iowa December 10 At the Red Cross sale the town and Scott and Union townships combined sold one pound of butter for 507 dollars. The Red Cross quilt donated by the Even Dozen club raised over 1090 dollars. A hand donated by Willis Davis brought 61.96 and will be offered again in two weeks with remaining unsold goods as three auctioneers worked all day. Receipts have not been totaled yet but the Red Cross will gain a handsome sum.

Fatal Farm Engine Fire Burns 14YearOld Boy

In Missouri Valley Iowa on December 16 a 14 year old boy, son of Mr and Mrs Bert Hoag, narrowly escaped death while starting a gasoline engine on the farm. He built a bonfire, tried to prime the engine with gasoline from a five gallon can, and his clothes caught fire. He ran to a water tank and jumped in, extinguishing the flames but his face and hands were badly burned. The engine was destroyed and a dog nearby was fatally burned.
