Census on the Seed Corn and Swine Situation in County
Black Hawk county through its defense council is conducting a seed corn and pork census, surveying every farmer. Cards collect seed corn estimates, corn acres for 1918, and planned seed selection, plus envelopes for corn kernels to track seed sources. The swine census asks sows bred, pigs raised, and sows to be bred in 1918, as government price supports and future guarantees guide farmers to keep hogs. The campaign stresses storage, curing, and testing seed, with officials noting an expected rise in hog prices and a national meat shortage prompting increased hog production.
