Masson City Aug 10 Yesterday County Engineer Robertson and crew completed an 18 foot wide concrete driveway linking Clear Lake and Mason City. A 4 foot wire shoulder will widen the road to 24 feet when finished. Koerl pushed the project to complete the 3,690 foot section at Clear Lake. The western end remains dirt capped for curing, with cars soon able to use the full link. A Labor Day celebration is planned, highlighting a Red Cross aid plan being developed.

At a Sioux County board meeting the contract for 10 miles of permanent highway grade was let at 38.9 cents per card. The bid beat two prior attempts after rejection of the first settings. Arrest of Baron von Roeden Hasen on spy allegations in Davenport
Baron Willie von Roeden Hasen, former German cavalry officer, was arrested in Davenport on suspicion of spying after sending several suspicious telegrams to a German contact in Nebraska. Two suitcases of papers seized and handed to federal officers. He admitted traveling across the United States in the past year and was working as a baker at a Davenport confectionery at the time of arrest.
