Bethlehem Steel workers win eight hour day and wage reforms
The national war labor board rules in Bethlehem Steel case covering about 28,000 workers. It grants the right to organize, enforces collective bargaining, revises piece work rates, and establishes a minimum hourly wage for 5,000 machine shop workers. Eight hour day with time and a half overtime, and double time on Sundays and holidays are set. Women receive equal pay for equal work. The decision creates a local mediation board and assigns an examiner to interpret and enforce the award. Wages for 440 electricians rise to 67 1 2 cents for first class, 62 1 2 cents for second class, and 40 cents for helpers. Wages for other workers left to bargaining.
